Athletes to get P1.5-M worth of bananas
By FRANK CALAPRE, The Manila Times Correspondent
The Philippine Banana Growers Export Association has responded to the call to help Filipino athletes in their quest for the overall crown in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games from November 27 to December 5.
Sports Commissioner Leon Montemayor said on Wednesday that the PBGEA, headed by Rodolfo del Rosario, is donating P1.5-million worth of the potassium-rich fruit from Davao for the 1,200 Filipino athletes until the last day of December.
"It’s really good for the athletes because it is rich with potassium, and that is what our athletes need for their training," said Montemayor, who hails from Davao City.
Montemayor said that PBGEA members Stephen Antig, Quitoy Lorenzo, and Bebot Dizon Marfori are also planning to continue their support for RP athletes until the Qatar Asian Games next year.
He said some 80 boxes of export-quality bananas will be distributed weekly to the different training centers, including the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Philsports in Pasig and Teachers’ Camp in Baguio City.
"They really wanted to also contribute for the cause of our athletes, and they are planning to extend their support until the Asian Games next year," he added.
Meanwhile some 104 athletes from four disciplines will leave for China on Saturday to undergo a month of training as part of their preparation for the biennial meet.
PSC Chairman William Ramirez asked the members of the training pool to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from the highly qualified coaches in China.
