which RIA do you like ?
laszlo is cool because of visual niceness is now finally possible for me. However, it is really targeted at developers. A developer can now create a nice UI with less headache. But I'm not sure in performance side of it.. Need to optimize every process of classes.
"When it comes to enterprise-grade app dev, Flex makes rich Internet applications attainable. For smaller, niche projects, Laszlo can fit the bill -- and the cost savings may just make it worth the added time or effort to get LPS working."
Laszlo vs Flex vs Ajax
Laszlo DOES NOT Support Unicode - OUCH
Laszlo IS Open Source - YAY
Flex COSTS $12K per (2 processor) Server - OUCH
AJAX / RoR is Open Source - YAY
AJAX Requires maintaining multiple code bases - OUCH
Flex works with Flash 8 which has FlashType, the best Text Rendering Engine available in a browser - YAY
I think OpenLaszlo already supports Unicode on version 4.x. I haven't verified it yet though.
Unlike Flex, OpenLaszlo doesn't need an IDE. Flex is tightly integrated with the IDE, which is bad because it's just like Visual Basic.
On the other hand, there's no IDE for OpenLaszlo right now because the devs have focused on stabilizing the platfrom first. As a result, web designers will have trouble adopting this. There was a plug-in for Eclipse a few years ago, but the original devs discontinued working on it.
The OpenLaszlo devs are working on an IDE, but it seems that it's not open source.
OpenLaszlo can also be used for AJAX applications because it can generate DHTML runtimes aside from Flash and Java. The architecture enables future devs to write other runtimes as well. Flex can only produce Flash, I think.

I used Spket IDE when developing Openlaszlo.. It can also integrated in eclipse.. it has also code completion, attribute, event, constraints and javascript..
for me... u dnt need to add ajax if you development OpenLaszlo.. its already client side and asynchronous ..like..
Client - OpenLaslzo
ServerSide - J2EE or PHP or Rails
Database - MySQL or Postgre or SQL Server
Spket offers code completion but it doesn't yet support drag and drop and visual layouting of the components. Unta naa sad ta tool nga morag Flex...![]()
