My little experiment this week. Lapping my AMD athlon 64x2 brisbane and gigabyte heatsink
I got 400, 600, no 800 available, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 and 2500 grit sandpaper, a piece of glass from my display cabinet, masking tape and thermal paste.
First, the heatsink.

After the 600 grit
and finish product after 2500 grit. Nice eh?

My AMD athlon 64x2 brisbane. Sory about the picture quality, Im using my Nokia N71.
After the 600 grit. Hmm, so, CPU's are not even. You can see that the sides got most of the sanding.
And the final product after the 2500 grit.
