Jeepney drivers: Change your driving habits!
SHOOTING STRAIGHT By Valeriano Avila

The Nagkahiusang Drayber sa Sugbo (NADSU) is once more planning another jeepney strike to protest the high prices of oil. Let me say it here that all Cebuanos are suffering from this problem and holding another jeepney strike would only increase the suffering of our people. These jeepney drivers are so damn self-centered; they think that they are the only ones suffering from the high-prices of oil. If they push through with this strike, then we’ll also pressure the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to crack the whip against the NADSU drivers who would participate in this planned two-day protest strike.
I have noticed that most of NADSU drivers have not changed their driving habits. They drive very much in the same way as if oil was cheap, gunning the engine while waiting at the stoplight then racing to the next jeepney stop and screeching to a halt! Whether they like it or not, we motorists can see the behaviour of these jeepney drivers and they haven’t changed one bit! Has NADSU given their members tips on how not to waste fuel? I’ll bet they didn’t! So if NADSU want our sympathy, they must show us that they have changed their driving habits, but as of this writing, I have yet to see them change their ways.
Many people living in compounds or villages have finally discovered what “car pooling” is all about. Pinoys and Americans have been doing this for decades even before the oil crunch because going to work solo would cost you a lot in the US. Finally, car pooling as become a reality here. I also do my share, using my motorcycle at least twice or thrice a week in order to save gasoline. So we expect that our jeepney drivers do the same, change their ugly driving habits to save fuel. If they don’t then it is time to really demand from the government to remove the jeepney from our streets as they are not a cost-effective way for mass transportation!
