CEBU City — The M. Lhuillier-backed Cebu Niņos captured their third leg title late Sunday by beating the Smart-Pampanga Buddies, 81-73, in Week 5 of the Liga Pilipinas Tour elimination phase at the Cebu Coliseum here.

Over at the Quezon Convention Center, the host Red Oilers made full use of their homecourt advantage in wearing down the Misamis Oriental Meteors, 76-68, for their first leg championship.

The thrilling Cebu-Pampanga game nearly turned ugly in the end when the Buddies stood around in the final 14.3 seconds apparently in protest over a technical called earlier on coach Aric del Rosario.

Del Rosario was slapped with a T with 2:29 to go for his vehement reaction after the referee awarded possession to Cebu following an out-of-bounds play.

Pampanga, trailing 77-75, was on the attack on a 2-1 fast break but the quick hands of ex-pro Stephen Padilla broke up the offense, resulting in a loose ball scramble between the Buddies’ Larry Rodriguez and the Niņos’ Ron Capati.

The Buddies felt Capati touched the ball last, but the referees thought otherwise.

The technical foul gave Cebu two free throws which Bruce Dacia sank to move the Niņos ahead, 77-73.

The Buddies again turned the ball over the next time up, with Mark Ababon stripping Rodriguez of possession.

Cebu failed to get a basket on three attempts, but its relentless rebounding kept them in control until coach Raul Alcoseba called timeout with 14.3 seconds left.

At the resumption of play, however, Pampanga players lined up at the midcourt, allowing Dacia to score a slam. Emerson Oreta then threw the leather to Capati who also soared for a dunk, representing the final scores.

In anger, the Cebuano crowd nearly mobbed the Pampanga coaching staff, and police had to step in to keep order.

Liga president and CEO Noli Eala, who was in attendance, confirmed Pampanga could face stiff sanction for its late-game behavior.

Dacia topped Cebu scorers with 27 markers and took his second Best Player of the Leg award.

    The scores:

    Niņos secure No. 1 spot

THE M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niņos shot back to the top of the team standings and picked the first of the four automatic slot into the quarterfinal round after winning the Cebu leg of the 2008 Liga Pilipinas Championships last Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Niņos defeated the Smart Pampanga Buddies, 81-73, in a game marred by the dramatic antics of the visitors to earn a total of 13 Liga points to shoot them back to the league leadership with a total of 37 points.

The Niņos can earn a maximum of 13 more points to keep the No. 1 spot and enjoy the homecourt advantage in its final elimination assignment in Iloilo City.

“I told the players only one word—determination. Determination to win, determination to rebound, determination to defend. I give it all to the players who really fought that hard to win the game,” said Cebu coach Raul Alcoseba.

Cebu started hot, opening the game 6-0 on its way to establish a 17-7 and 19-9 lead three minutes before the close of the first quarter.

However, Pampanga came back roaring and Cebu’s game dwindled until they found themselves trailing before the end of the first half.

    Help

just like in their elimination round meeting, Cebu got a little help from the technical foul slapped against the hot-headed Pampanga bench.

The last time was when Bruce Dacia sank two free throws when Pampanga coach Aric del Rosario made an outburst.

It was at that point that the Cebu crowd felt slighted by Pampanga’s behavior.

However, the worst was still to come.

After Mark Ababon stole possession of the leather and the hometeam’s rebounding resulted to three possessions—Pampanga did what warranted a huge penalty from the league.

    Order

The Pampanga players, upon order of their coaching staff, just lined up at midcourt, not bothering to hamper the Niņos offense and leading to an easy slam by Dacia.

“They will surely be slapped with sanctions and penalty. What they did was equivalent to a walkout,” said Liga president and CEO Noli Eala.

After the resumption of the game at the final 14.3 seconds of the game – Pampanga players, upon order by its coaching staff, just lined up at the midcourt while the Niņos were on offense, as a results Dacia slammed the ball hard.

Water bottles rained against the Pampanga coaching staff and the angry crowd tried to gang up on Del Rosario and company but luckily uniformed policemen were there to keep the peace.

Dacia, who had a brilliant game, topped Cebu scorers with 27 and took his second Best Player of the Leg award.

Up north, home team Quezon Red Oilers defeated Misamis Oriental Meteors 76-68 to pick its first leg title.

    Cebu (81)—Dacia 27, Capati 12, Padilla 12, Saladaga 10, Ababon 9, Aying 7, Basco 4. Pampanga (73)—L. Rodriguez 15, Oreta 13, Dillinger 11, Vizcarra 11, Alcaraz 10, Luanzon 7, Misa 4, Mercado 2. (RCM)

ILOILO — Revenge provides a gripping subplot when league-leaders and quarterfinal favorites Cebu and Pagadian clash in the southern leg curtain-raiser Wednesday as the Liga Pilipinas Tour elimination phase moves to Week 6 here.

The Explorers, who briefly wrested the solo leadership from the Cebuanos, and the Ninos square off at 3 p.m., followed by the featured game pitting the host Iloilo Mang Inasals against the Quezon Red Oilers, the Week 5 northern leg winners.

The two pace-setting teams have met once before in a leg final, with Cebu nipping Pagadian, 72-67, in the championship of Week 3 at the Explorers’ homecourt.

In the northern leg, the hosts Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes battle the Misamis Oriental Meteors following the encounter between the Taguig Batang Global and the Lipa Barakos at 3 p.m.

Tour points broken down as follows – 10 for the champion, 5 for the runner-up, and 3 for the third placer.

A team can earn additional point for every game won in each of the four legs it participates in.

At the end of Week 5 in Quezon Province – ruled by the Red Oilers – and the Cebu – won by the Ninos – Cebu retained the top spot with 37 points followed by Pagadian (29), Pampanga (27), Taguig (23), Lipa-Batangas (17), Ilocos Sur (16), Misamis Oriental (15), Quezon (14), Tagaytay-Cavite (12), Baguio (12), Laguna (, Zamboanga (3), and Iloilo (3).

The top four teams after the 13-leg elimination advance to the best-of-three quarterfinals round.

A wildcard stage among the next eight teams will determine which four will join the early quarterfinalists, with the 5th- to the 8th-ranked holding a twice-to-beat edge against their 9th to 12th places.
