Since I've decided to officially use Xubuntu for my normal tasks and leave Windows to games, I'm looking for a good Linux counterpart of Windows Media Player + K-lite Codec Mega Pack.
Anyone?

VLC
Try mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html
VLC gyud bro.. maski unsa na os.. heheheh taw.anan biya kayo na kay once e drag nimo ang video file gikan sa recycle bin kay mo play gihapon.. hehee lol..
VLC (plays almost anything you throw at it) and Mplayer.
yup... VLC gyud. wala nay lain. di na nid ug mga pataban kay naa na iya daan codec na built in and almost reads/plays any audio/video format.
XINE... and install plugins (there are available plugins ready for downloads for each of the distro you like)
im using puppy linux 3.1 and xine plays almost everthing....
Be warned though that VLC has problems playing *.mkv files. There's also the problem with softsubs, ex. in a particular series that has subs in both the top and the botto, part displayed at the same time, under windows (with your faorite codec) this will be played correctly, but under vlc the sub displayed at the top will mix with the one in the buttom, making the sub totally unreadable.
So under Linux to meet optimum play back results you could at least install these two:
Mplayer
VLC
BTW, in regards to playback, you might wanna read thses:

libdvdcss2 and w32codecs for Ubuntu Ubuntu Blog
HOWTO: Win32 Video Codecs - Ubuntu Forums
Hope that helps, somehow.

You can go for MPlayer, if you don't mind compiling it from its source code. You can also go for VLC. Give a test run for both players and decide.
