What matters the most when hiring a programmer?

If you are the owner of a certain company and you are in need of programmers, what are the qualifications you require? Do you believe that all or most good programmers are college graduates or graduates of computer related courses?

No, I totally disagree the sentence regarding collage graduate.
I am in the programming business since 1980, and all good programmer I know are not graduate in any computer related subject. They are all "computer freaks", using the computer as a hobby, self-studying by doing.

If I would hire a programmer, I would not care a little what collage graduation he/she has. I would look at his/her experience, how he/she react to certain programming related questions.

Anyway, thats my opinion.

experience is the best teacher. not all programming languages are taught @ school. what you are studying today might be already obsolete when you graduate, that is the downside of IT.

I totally agree with you guys but how come most of the hiring you see in the newspaper ads require at least a BS degree?

programming is a skill, its doesnt rely on educational background, its the ACCESS of the GLobalization
