SPORTS REPORTER
LOS ANGELES–If Jorge Garbajosa's NBA career is coming to an end, one of his closest friends knows his passion for the game will never abate.
"He's a great player, a great guy. He just wants to enjoy himself and play basketball and he didn't feel like this year he was given the opportunity to play," Pau Gasol said. "He was a little bit unhappy, frustrated, during the summer and in last year."
Reports in Spain yesterday said the Raptors are working with Garbajosa on buying out the final year of the contract that's supposed to pay him $4.25 million (U.S.) in the 2008-09 NBA season.
There was no mention of financial inducements to have the last of Garbajosa's three-year deal voided.
"We're still working on a resolution to the entire Garbo scenario," Toronto's president and general manager Bryan Colangelo said.
The "entire Garbo scenario" is a dicey one involving the Raptors, insurance firms and the Spanish basketball federation and it's likely all are involved in any buyout talks.
There are still negotiations going on with the Spanish federation over insurance payments on a policy taken out to cover Garbajosa when he played for Spain in last summer's European championship.
The Spanish federation still wants Garbajosa to play in the Beijing Olympics this year – and Garbajosa badly wants to play – but Colangelo said the team would not allow the 31-year-old forward to play.
"He loves playing with the national team," said Gasol, a teammate of Garbajosa's for almost a decade on the Spanish national team. "I know the situation has been tough for Toronto because Toronto wants him to be at his best physically and be healthy so he can produce. His rookie year, he was so good. I guess they got a little bit upset with him after his injury that he played in the European championship.
"It's hard to deny a player to ... play for the national team. It's such a great passion, an honour."
Garbajosa suffered a grisly leg and ankle injury in a game in March 2007 that set in motion the events that have led to this point.
He missed the last 15 games of the 2006-07 seasons and all but seven games of the 2007-08 season, recovering from a series of surgeries to repair the damage.
The 6-foot-9 forward did play for Spain in the European championships, against the wishes of the Raptors and only after the Spanish Basketball Federation took out a $1 million insurance policy in case further damage was done to the leg.
The Raptors have filed a lawsuit against the Spanish federation, trying to get some of the insurance money, although they suspended the suit last month to try and reach a negotiated settlement.

Rumors:
1. Carmelo Anthony's name continues to find its way into trade?
The reason Anthony's name is out there has to do with the way the season finished for the Nuggets. It's obvious the Nuggets are never going to win a championship with the roster the team had last season. Add to that quotes from various members of the organization saying the team will look at every possible avenue to get better, and you've got all the makings of a hot trade rumor. Not only that, but you've got GM's from around the league calling the Nuggets hoping to "buy low" in the NBA's version of the stock market.
2. The Spurs had similar trouble bringing over their Luis Scola over from Argentina when a buy-out with Tau couldn't be agreed upon. While Tau wanted many millions to let Scola free, the Spurs were limited to offering $500,000 by NBA rules. In order to make it worthwhile for Scola to pay for the majority of his buyout, the Spurs would have needed to commit a sizable contract to their 2002 second-round pick (55th) via their Mid-Level Exception.
3. The sexy rumor has the Bulls and the HEAT completing a blockbuster trade involving Dwyane Wade and the #2 pick going to the Chicago. The more likely scenario involves the HEAT trading down so they can select O.J. Mayo, who multiple league sources have said is the guy Miami covets to play next to Wade. Miami needs a point guard, but the chances Seattle's Luke Ridnour or Earl Watson will strike the HEAT's fancy aren't great. Randy Foye in Minnesota would likely interest Miami, but the Wolves likely wouldn't part with him in a deal for Beasley given the fact young stud Al Jefferson has the four-spot pretty much on lock.
4. Lakers Should Trade Andrew Bynum?
Win or lose the championship, the Lakers should strongly consider trading Andrew Bynum. It's not that Bynum is a bad player; he's actually shown that he can be a pretty good player and may have a few All-Star games in his future. But the Lakers are a much better team with Pau Gasol playing center – he's played so well that Bynum hasn't been missed. Things changed for the better the moment Gasol arrived in Hollywood.
What the... I'd pick Bynum over Gasol at any day. Gasol is not that tough when it comes to posting up while Bynum is a blossoming monster down the middle. I'd rather trade Odom instead to not let go of either Gasol or Bynum. Odom is gonna make $14million next season and they can swap him for a PG.
They can trade Odom for any of the ff PGs:
Kirk Hinrich
TJ Ford or Jose Calderon
Jamal Tinsley
Jarett Jack
Beno Udrih
OR even a draft pick+cash considerations. However, if the Lakers are still planning to maintain the chemistry, they can simply let Odom play through next season and just let him walk right after his contract expires.
Bottomline is that, they needed Bynum in that series vs Boston. The manchild carries two factors that could've spelled a difference in that series, rebounding and shot-blocking. That would certainly make enough room for Gasol to do his thing and make KG busy on the defensive end. Pero, unsaon ta man, humana man.
ONe more hirit, the Lakers can trade Odom for Artest also. If they want toughness.
yeah thats what lakers should have....a 3 spot, artest is perfect...we can cosider ariza but he has not that wide body, but his good.
the Lakers will not trade Bynum. They still haven't got he full potentials of his talent. Most likely, it's Odom that's going to the trading block.
