i hope not. ebooks can never replace the tangible characteristics of a book. u can touch and smell the pages, thats something that gives readers a personal relation with books. on the other hand, ebooks can save lots of paper, less trees will be cut, thats good for the environment...

but i stil prefer books. kaso, mahal lang. ive jus downloaded murakami ebooks. hehehhe. i cant afford those murakamis at powerbooks.

In my opinion, e-books are a sore to the eyes so eventhough they're cheaper, I still prefer to get my books from the bookstore.

However, technology always comes up with something easier and more environment-friendly. I think in a couple of years, when we can read off tangible and portable (by this i mean smaller than a laptop) digital screens that resemble books, then the paperbacks and hardbounds would be a thing of the past. This may also be driven by pressure from environmentalists, which, for me, is a very good thing (save the trees!)

The technology should not put a lot of strain to the eyes, though, because that is one main factor why people aren't really fond of e-books.
I'm looking forward to that technology. I just hope it won't cause illnesses like cancer though *sigh*

IMHO if computer screens give people eyesore then over a 700 million office workers worldwide would be filing lawsuits against their employers, because computer screens are what they look at every single day.

The technology is closer than most people think...

    Look at the image below...

...it's no different from reading a glossy magazine.

Cell phones are more likely to cause cancer than a flexible LCD ebook due to the microwave radiation.

I did say ebooks are a sore to the eyes but I wasn't referring to office workers working on computers everyday because that is a different story. I was talking about the leisurely time of reading, like a 500 paged Harry Potter book, which, by the way, I read off from Acrobat and did not prove to be the most pleasurable reading experience I had. If I had to read off Acrobat 4x a week, which I normally do with a normal book, I would have to visit my ophthalmologist quite as often!

Btw, the pics you displayed actually show what I had in mind and I wasn't sure if such technology exists now cos I'm not the biggest fan of tech stuff. But it's good that you posted them though; the "near future" is indeed closer than what I thought.

possible only when each & every individual has access to an ebook device. otherwise, ink on paper won't become obsolete.

I think books will never be obsolete. Reading and E-book and a regular book is totally different. With a regular book you can bring it anywhere and read it and won't be needing a power supply or battery to operate it.
