Liga Pilipinas offers unique tourney format

In an effort to spice up its maiden season, the newly formed Liga Pilipinas will unveil a brand new tournament format never seen before in any local basketball league.

Dubbed as a "basketball tour challenge," the format patterned after the ATP Tour in tennis and the PGA Tour in golf, will feature all 16 member teams of Liga Pilipinas hosting one leg each of the Tour stage where the various member teams will not only play for mini championships with incentives but also for tournament points that will be necessary to qualify them for the playoffs.

Liga Pilipinas President and CEO Noli Eala who conceptualized the format believes the uniqueness and novelty of the format will quickly differentiate the fledgling regional league from all its predecessors and other existing leagues. "Our format represents what Liga Pilipinas stands for – freshness, dynamism and efficiency of ideas," Eala stated.

The format calls for 2 legs to be played every week with 4 teams playing in each leg.

Winners will be declared leg champions and awarded cash prizes as incentives while accumulating tournament ranking points of 5 points to the leg champion, 3 points to the leg runner up, 1 point to the leg 2nd runner up and 0 points to the last placed team.

Teams will then be ranked according to the number of tour points which they garnered. The top 12 teams will enter the next stage of the tournament or the playoffs in a home and away head to head format leading to the National Liga Pilipinas Finals.

"We wanted to make sure that our format is simple yet unique, extensive yet economical and satisfies the Filipinos desire for championships while maintaining the "home-and-away concept. This format has it all. We are all excited already for this landmark innovation." Eala remarked.

Liga Pilipinas is set to start its first season on May 23 in Cebu City. 16 teams from various major regions of the country have already signified its participation in the community-based league.
