Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify

H guys,
I have created a sign up scripts in php that sends an email to user for verification of their registration..........and i got an error!
Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() in C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\realestate\signup_ac.p hp on line 39
How can I connect to a mailserver from my localhost? I have checked other threads on this topic, really tried hard to search a solution, but I failed miserably.
Here's my configuration
Apache 2.2
MySql Server 5.0
Php 5.0
OS: Windows XP Professional SP2
