for computer editing, do not go for MAC, why to expensive, better if ull invest a PC worth 50k-250k
    *50k package -p4 3.0ghz, ASUS p5s800 mobo, 1gig RAM, 80gig seagateSATA, leadtek 6200 128mb, leadtek FM/TV tuner w/ capture card, DVD-burner, creative xfree speakers, AOC 17" flat, & ANTEC sonata w/ 400watts PSU

with a P50K-P250K budget, i'd certainly would rather go for a mac than a PC. but then again, I edit with a 8086XT processor.

as for cameras, I say use any DV cam you have. heck, i'm thinking of using my Video 8 one of these days to shoot an MTV.

    murag kungfu..

"your XL2 cannot beat my VX2000"
"ha! my Video 8 will save the both of you."
"not while my VHS cam is around..."

    and as vanceloma says...

"no one will ever suspect a cardboard box"

read vanceloma's post about preparing to shoot a documentary...

    on doing interviews:

    - learn how to interview. build a rapport with your subject, talk to them before the actual interview, make them
feel comfortable. soon enough they will tell you about their family and their secret recipe for ngohiong.

    - know the people who you will interview, make a background check on who they are and what is their relevance to your subject. ask people who batman really is.

    - also, do your research. during the interview, some subjects will not voluntarily speak about certain topics. lead them to the conversation, make them think you already know about it and that you just want a clarification.

    Yup, everything pnoize2k4 said...

also, don't call the shots during an interview. This might be rather trivial, but you aren't directing your interviewee like you are directing your actor. To help make him more comfortable, just a light tap on the interviewer to fire his first question when the camera is already rolling will do.

Good is relative and subjective.... there is no clear step-by-step guide... i could offer you this www.wordplayer.com helps aspiring movie writers write the sellable movie storyline.. with articles like beachcombing and the strange attractor, you're own your way of creating a unique storyline which EVERYONE will enjoy... some things can't be taught but can only be learned... Good luck!

A good storyline. One thing in editing even a reality show is to execute some good storytelling skills. Even some of these principles are used in SURVIVOR, misdirection, red herrings and interviews that lead you astray as to whom gets voted off the island. They've had some 18 hours of footage but they must be able to cut it to a concise 1 hour (or 40 min.) program. Cutting your footage all boils down to executing the storytelling aspect. And like what one has mentioned, communicating since docu man imong himu-on.

    Storytelling:
