in my experience, there is no specific food that can make your turtle shell looks more beautiful but there is a way to make their color dull - malnutrition. That means enough vitamins, proteins & fibers, clean water, and of course sunshine is what a turtle needs.

just finished setting up my res tank.

    setup:
    undergravel filter
    pebbles (to cover filter)
    a bamboo platform (basking)
plants (i dunno if those will survive my clowns... lolz!)
5 feeders (3 nalang diay kay gininja nilang duha gabii)
    20 gallon tank
    log

    will post pics tomorrow.

question: cant res let plants be? ila gyud na ibton or kan-on?

RES eat almost anything edible. dili na niya palabyon ang plants.hehehe ang plastic plants man gani tripan.hehehe good thing dili dali maputol or ma uproot.
leostargolem usually gets duckweeds or riccia from my planted tank and feed his RES with it.

@potterboy: yey! naa napud laing RES owner diri!

1] just make sure your pebbles are big enough nga dili makaon sa imong RES. kai they'll eat almost anything. RES dying because of impaction in the digestive system is common.

2] for the basking area, make sure 90F ang temp sa area nya kinahanglan pud sila maigo ug UV rays either from a UVB flourescent light or from the sun or else shell problems will occur.

3] about the plants, if they're real, sure gyud ko nga ma-shred ra na kadugayan. they even tear my fake plants apart.

4] feeders will do good for small RES at least twice a week. pero anara na daan ug pakaon ug veggies kai apara dili mag-pyramiding ilang shell. also feed them cuttlebone for calcium.

5] save up for a bigger tank. before you know it, managko na sila ug kalit, and they defnitely need more space for swimming.

i'm looking forward for the pics. also, please visit www.redearslider.com for more info, nya register pud sa ilang forum to meet other RES owners.

twice a week lang diay dapat ang feeders? lolz, i bought 5 platys and 5 feeders, the female ate 2 and another feeder ganina. separate nalang nako feeder sa lain nga tank. wehehehe. thanks for the info. sa cuttlebone, pwede egg shell?

wala pako kaupload kay nabusy ko. maybe later.

im planning to setup a turtle pond dha sa cebu. sa backyard lang. excited na ko kay naa man gud attitude ni sila.

@potterboy: masuya man pud ta anang outdoor pond nga idea. tsk tsk tsk...

ok ra mag feeder fish ka as much as you want... gagmai pa man kaha imo RES? pero anara lang daan ug veggies para dili naka maglisod ug pakaon nila inig dako nila. kai para dili sila maanad sa feeder fish, ma-sobraan nya ug protein nya mag-pyramiding dayun ang shell...

and about sa egg shell, i dunno. i havent tried it yet. pero affordable raman pud ang cuttlebone.. tag 30 pesos ra gani didto sa mascot pets. just take of the hard backing sa cuttlebone (lisud kaayo kuhaon), nya ipalutaw ang cuttlebone sa tank. it wont affect the water quality.

akong style kai nipalit ko ug duha ka cuttlebone, threw the hard backing away, cut them off to bite sized shapes, nya gibutang sa canister. so when i feed them cuttlebone once a week, ako nalang kuhaon gikan sa canister...

ang size sa pebbles kay dagko ra para maingkit nila. water change nako kay 20% ra every 3 days and every month nako undergravel clean up (schedule). malingaw raman sad ko magtan-aw nila. makawala stress along with my pug. palit ko cuttlebone ugma and i will follow your method. thanks.

    glad to help.

if you're asking how to keep the tank clean, my answer is this: get a feeding dish for them. feed them in a different container and leave them for an hour or two para mahurot ang food. (overfeeding is a no-no). nya huwat lang pud para maka-defecate sila. you'll see how much waste ilang ma-produce in a single feeding session. it would save you a lot of time in the long run.

undergravel filter ra imong filter? try daw ug submersible filter... i use fluval 3 plus. or better yet kung naa kai funds diha, palit ug ug canister filter... mao mai recommended for turtle tanks kai they are 3x messier than fishes.

and about cleaning the tank, i do 50% water changes kada sunday morning kai sayo manko maka-uli gikan trabaho. nya once a month ra nako i-full tank cleanup.

i feed the turts first in their feeding dish, nya get everything out of the tank nya i-scrub dayun under running water. nya human kuha-on dayong ang tubig gikan sa tank using a hose. scrub-an dayun ang tank with vinegar, lino-an dayun, nya butangan ug new water. don't forget to dechlorinate sa water kai sakit daw na sa mata sa mga RES. if you can buy a water conditioner for turtles, that'd be great. i use Turtle Clean. pwede pud ka gamit ug Sera Aquatan. nya human ibutang balik ang mga ornaments and substrate. nya ibalik dayun ang RES sa tank..
