i suggest you read some reviews from CD freaks. these are some of the latest drives from the manufacturers you mentioned:
LG review (GSA-4163B): http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/172
Samsung review (TS-H552B): http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/163
so far, LG's been getting good reviews while Samsung, not much. i'm actually planning on getting an LG drive myself. AFAIK, Sony drives are rebadged Lite-ons

NEC is the best
i agree with the NEC drive, but it's hard to get locally and it's not totally the best overall. usually, i would recommend the NEC ND-3500A or the BenQ DW1620.
but i recently upgraded my old Lite-on to an LG GSA-4163B (bought from jobhim23) and i have to say so far, the burns are great!here are sample quality scans from the discs i've burnt with this drive:
BenQ DVD+R 4X (DAXONAZ1)
Iomega DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR04)
RiDATA DVD+R 4X (RITEKR02)
you can read about interpreting these scans here
i've also seen scans from my officemates' BenQ DW1620 and NEC ND-2510A drives on these media and IMHO, the LG GSA-4163B''s write quality is also on par with their drives.
@idlewild - that LG drive you bought? have tried actual testing in writing it on various kinds of dvds and dual layer ones also? how the performance?
i still have to test other media as soon as those are available at CDR-King. don't have plans to test DL media since my enclosure can't keep up with the transfer speed needed and those media cost much.
my basis for comparison is with branded media which are also used by my officemates' for their drives. i seldom use generic ones.
for me, drives from NEC, BenQ and LG (especially the later models) are the best.
gamit ra ug dvd-r nga disc nga compatible sa dvd-rw para di ka maka ingon nga "pili-an man ning dvd writer nako oi". ug ayaw ug palit anang mga baratohon nga generic, maka guba rana sa writer, buy the branded ones.
