Dude, the only way for you to work legally here in the US is that you must have a working visa which is H1B.. if you plan come here using your B1 visa that's fine but if you will start working here even you are waiting for your H1B to be approved it's not advisable because literally it is illegal.
What I can suggest to your situation is go ahead and sign up with your Chicago employer to sponsor your H1B visa now (it will take 1 year of waiting anyway) of course they know that it will take that long and then the cap this year is expected to have another lottery so you still have 50-50% chances until you are confirmed with USCIS papers... also while waiting for your current employer contract to complete unless you did sign up for 2year contract.
his employer company can have his current visa classification converted into H-3 training visa or J-1 internship visa, whichever is applicable and convenient, in anticipation for the H-1B approval.
