To answer your question, the use of the HDD is to store your Downloaded (Net) Full Games (ex. Warkhawk and Tekken 5R), Downloaded Demos (DMC4 demo and etc), Downloaded Blu-ray Movie Trailers, Downloaded Misc files (Pictures and Themes), any music or video file (and play them on your PS3), and other misc files like the game patches and save files.
