What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is an important part of the body's antioxidant defense system. Glutathione is composed of three different amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. Vitamins B6 and riboflavin are critical for maintaining adequate levels of glutathione within the body.
Research suggests that a variety of minerals, including copper and selenium, have a strong influence on cellular levels of glutathione. In addition, selenium is an essential part of many different forms of glutathione that exist in the body.
Because of its antioxidant properties, glutathione neutralizes damaging free radicals and peroxide molecules, and recharges oxidized vitamin C so that the body may reuse it. Glutathione is required for a variety of metabolic processes. In addition, glutathione bolsters the structure of body proteins and assists in the transport of amino acids across cell membranes.
Interestingly, the phytochemical limonene may boost the body's synthesis of a glutathione-containing enzyme that has antioxidant properties and helps to detoxify chemicals. Limonene is found in citrus fruit peels, cherries, green foods (celery, fennel), soy products, and wheat.
Several foods contain naturally occurring glutathione, including avocado, watermelon, asparagus, grapefruit, potato, acorn squash, strawberries, orange, tomato, cantaloupe, broccoli, okra, peach, zucchini, and spinach.
Health Benefits
Glutathione has several health benefits. Optimal amounts of glutathione are necessary for supporting the immune system, and, in particular, glutathione is required for replication of the lymphocyte immune cells.
Glutathione also helps the liver to detoxify chemicals, such as acetaminophen (active ingredient in pain relief medication), copper, and cadmium.
Scientists speculate that increasing consumption of antioxidants, such as glutathione, early in life may promote longevity and reduce chronic disease.
Research is currently exploring the potential benefits of glutathione for several conditions including cancer, heart disease, memory loss, osteoarthritis, Parkinson's disease, cornea disorders, kidney dysfunction, eczema, liver disorders, poisoning by heavy metals, and immunodepression that occurs in diseases such as AIDS.
Glutathione Benefits
Immune System
Immune Depressed individuals have lower GSH levels when fighting disease. Lymphocytes, cells vital for your immune response, depend on GSH for their proper function and replication. Immunology 61: 503-508 1987. Cellular depletion of Glutathione has been implicated as a causative, or contributory factor in many pathologies including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cataracts, arteriosclerosis, cystic fibrosis, malnutrition, aging, AIDS and cancer (Bounous et al., 1991). In addition, Glutathione is essential in supporting the immune system, including natural killer cells (Droege et al., 1997) and in the maintenance of T-lymphocytes (Gutman, 199.
Cancer
GSH plays a role in eliminating many carcinogens as well as maintaining immune function towards providing stronger anti-tumor defenses. Cancer Letters 57: 91-94 1991
Aging Process
It is known that as we age, there is a precipitous drop in GSH levels. Lower Glutathione levels are implicated in many diseases associated with aging, including Cataracts, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, arteriosclerosis and others. Journal of Clinical Epidemiology 47: 1021-28 1994
Athletes
Strong muscular activity generates oxyradicals leading to muscle fatigue and poorer performance. GSH neutralizes these radicals. Whey proteins promote muscular development. Sports Medicine 21; 213 - 238, 1996. Recent research indicates that propensities toward many degenerative diseases and aging itself are related to the capacity of the cell to robustly recover from oxidative insult. The capacity of a cell to recover from such insult can be determined by measuring the intracellular stores of Glutathione. (Noelle et al., 1981)
Antioxidant Functions
Antioxidants are well documented to play vital roles in health maintenance and disease prevention. GSH is our cell's own major antioxidant. Why not use what is natural? Biochemical Pharmacology 47:2113-2123 1994
Neurological Disease
Low GSH has been demonstrated in nuerodegenerative diseases such as MS (Multiple Sclerosis), ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's, among others. The Lancel 344: 796-798 1994
Toxins, Pollution, Radiation
GSH detoxifies many pollutants, carcinogens and poisons, including many in fuel exhaust and cigarette smoke. It retards damage from radiation such as seen with loss of the ozone. Annual Review of Biochemistry 52 : 711-780 1983. The liver is the main detoxification organ of the body. In the liver we find very high concentrations of GSH, as it is a major factor in numerous biochemical detoxification pathways. Numerous studies have demonstrated that patients with compromised liver function due to alcohol abuse have significant reduction of GSH in the liver. (Lamestro, 1995)
AIDS
Low Glutathione levels with poor survival in AIDS patients. Much literature has been written demonstrating the role of enhancing GSH levels in AIDS. Proc. National Acad. Science USA 94: 2967-72 1997

Low glutathione levels are implicated in immune compromised individuals, neuro-degenerative diseases such as MS, ALS, Alzheimers, and Parkinsons, atherosclerosis, hydroxylradical formation, cataracts, damage from many pharmaceutical drugs, cancer and poor survival rates for victims of AIDS.
As the major detoxifying agent in the body, increased glutathione benefits the entire immune system by providing more support for the detoxification of ever-increasing levels of chemical pollutants, carcinogens and ultraviolet radiation.
Glutathene contains Immunoglobin and Glycomacropeptide in addition to a critical concentration of three bioactive proteins: the thermolabiles - Serum Albumin, Alpha-lactalbumin and Lactoferrin.
Using modern technology, Glutathene represents a cost-effective break through in obtaining and consistently preserving, in their native form, the specific cow's milk proteins which share with the predominant human milk proteins, the same extremely rare GSH-promoting components. The retail price for Glutathene is 3 to 5 times less expensive than other retail whey protein concentrates on the market specific to raising cellular glutathione levels .

Glutathione (GSH)
ALA(Alpha Lipoic Acid) has been shown to increase cellular levels of glutathione.
Glutathione is a crucial substance found in every cell in our body. It cannot enter most cells directly and must therefore be made inside the cell from three amino acids that are obtained from our food. Dietary glutathione is found in fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, fish and meat, asparagus, avocado, and walnuts. However, since these amino acids are relatively scarce in foods, it may be necessary to supplement them to replenish glutathione levels.
Glutathione levels diminish as we age and many diseases normally linked with aging have been related to a glutathione deficiency. Examples of some of these health conditions include diabetes, low sperm counts, liver disease, cataracts, and HIV infection, respiratory distress syndrome, cancer, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Glutathione is always in great demand and is rapidly consumed when we experience any sort of pressure - illness, stress, fatigue and even when we exercise. Cigarette smoking is also associated with low glutathione levels because it increases the rate of glutathione utilization.
The immune system's function is to detect and attack germs and other invaders, including cancer cells. A body with plenty of glutathione has the ability to defend against these threats more easily by denying most of them a foothold and by confronting the few that do get through with an enhanced immune system.
Raised glutathione levels allow the body to produce an increased number of white blood cells - the most important front line defense of the immune system. Glutathione plays a key role in the function of these immune cells. Healthy growth and activity of immune cells depend upon the availability of glutathione.
Our main organ of detoxification is the liver - the most concentrated source of glutathione in the body. Studies show that low glutathione levels lead to poor liver function, resulting in more and more toxins circulating through the body and finally in damage to individual cells and organs.
In fact human life depends on glutathione. Without it cells would disintegrate from unrestrained oxidation, the body would have little resistance to bacteria, viruses and cancer, and the liver would shrivel up from the eventual accumulation of toxins.
