    Just some points.

First, before you negate the value of trade or labor unions, please read more about their origins and what purpose they have for workers.

Second, in article is one probably reason why even though call center companies like Western Watts are doing well, they are laying off people...from http://tucpblog.wordpress.com/2006/1...p-value-chain/

(take note of my points of emphasis in bold letters)

...To maintain or increase its share of this business, the Philippines has to make extra effort to improve the quality of its BPO services so its BPO companies can provide more value-added services that also pay more, Convergys Corp. president David Dougherty said.

“It would be extremely wise for [the country] to move up the value chain beyond mere contact center operations,” he said at a media.

Dougherty visited the country to inaugurate the firm’s newest site at its low-rise building along Ayala Ave. called Convergys One.

“You’ll need to go into real BPO operations which will require an increased complexity of skills,” he said.

Critics of the Philippine call center industry have long pointed out that it provides only low value-added services that can easily be replicated in other countries, especially since the quality of English language education has declined significantly in recent years.

Dougherty said the Philippines would continue to profit from the present call center business model, which relies heavily on client-operator interaction by phone — which allows Filipinos to leverage their relative superiority in English language proficiency.

Continue to profit, but like anything else, until when? For real growth to occur soon, qualitative, and not only quantitative changes, have to occur.

i'm not saying that i am pro-union but i am not against it.

no union = equals no justice, in this country

ngano man? because our DOLE & NLRC is corrupt and inutile. the government is pro-investor/capitalist. so who will stand for juan de la cruz?

our family are capitalists but i was also an employee of a BPO, MEPZA as well as a mutinational company & I have to say that when there is a no union, a common employee has no one to run to and has a very remote chance in fighting against exploitation bisan dili pa pobre.

a employer-employee relationship is a 2 way thing. dili labaw ang employer. mao gyud na sakit natong mga pinoy, we don't know how to assert our rights and we easily forget.

has there been a complaint already filed in the NLRC or the DOLE...

before a company resorts to termination... there must have been a formal notice of the mass terminations to the DOLE. they should have handed notices of the termination to their EE's not just a verbal one. and separation pay too. it should be justified with economic causes sa company. if wala ni comply ang western ana... they are in deep trouble.

of course, it would look like the NLRC or the DOLE is inutile because they will not take action unless one of them files a case against WESTERN.

has there been separation pay?! something needs to be done here.... of course, starting with the terminated employees of WESTERNWATS, they should file a complaint.

@mata hari - if the company filed bankruptcy...i don't think there's a separation pay...and also dili tanan companya mohatag ug separation pay..depende sa kasabotan ug sa regularity sa employee..
