Default Please educate me about macro lens

I am only new to photography. I am aware that macro lens are used for insects etc... What determines it's macro ability...i.e sa telephoto we would look at 500 mm reaches farther than 200mm right? How about macro lenses? Where and what numbers would we look at? HybernaTe, you are into macro right? Can you please share with me what you know? Thanks.

kay naa man gud normal lens nga 18-135 mm and naa pud macro lens nga 50mm mao naglibog ko. So if it says 18mm nya normal lens lang cya, wala d i cya macro ability? kinahanglan jud nga macro jud and butang? or for example ari napud ta sa wide lenses, would my 18-135 mm normal lens be more wider than a 20mm nga specifically gi-indicate nga wide lens? pasencya na crashburn ha if kulit. I just find these confusing. I wil also google these things up but if our istoryan pros can answer this mas maayo kysa mangeta ug mu take time pa. Thank you.

ill assume you are using Canon...

Canon EF 28-138 f4-5.6 IS USM Macro (0.19x) / EF 24-70 2.8L (0.29x) USM Macro - these zoom lenses have macro capability. But, dili lang 1x iya'ng magnification. Check lang lens specifications sa web.

Canon EF 100mm 2.8 USM Macro & EF 180mm 3.5L USM Macro lenses in the other hand are what we call... REAL macro lenses... yes 1x magnification...

as the question asked "macro lens" is a specific piece of lens dedicated for macro photography which has factors concerning reach (mm) and magnification (1:1x)

a macro shoot can be achieve in many ways...
    - prime fixed macro (50mm, 100mm, etc... 1:1 or more | life size 1x 2x 3x)
    - zoom macro (cant achieve 1:1 ratio)
    - extension tubes (variable * don't know how to calculate ratio)
    - reverse lens (variable also)
    - close-up filter (don't know)

I own a SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di Macro Lens 1:1 I love this piece of lens, I'm using it for product photography (jewelry, diamonds, crystals and others)
I do have also +1 +2 +4 macro filters - not much of it, as I am a SONY ALPHA / MINOLTA we released the first super power macro lens with 3X-1X macro capability (years after Canon followed)
This lens is hard to find now a days and cost a US$1-2k around the net (eBay) you can [read more here]

I have my own wish list also, (errr. not the 3x-1x thing) but this

Oh i forgot to mention macro photography has many niche for you to do and each of these has its own specified equipment setup.
    - insect (8 or more legs)
    - coin / paper bill
    - product (jewelry)
    - flower

    Accessories for macro photography
    - ring light (light is most important as the DOF is too shallow already)
    - macro twin flash (add more light)
    - tripod
many many more (as long as you have the money you can buy more and more. if no money you can do DIY)

If you want to learn more... you can buy MACRO photography books in amazon or eBay.

Extension tubes provide (for some people) an attractive way of adding a Macro capability to their camera set up. Extension tubes are available for almost every SLR body, can be attached to different lenses for different effects, and are much, much less expensive than dedicated macro lenses

You may have noticed that the longer the lens, the lesser amount of magnification the extension tube gets you. This is because of how an extension tube works. Every lens has a minimum focus distance as part of it's characteristics, for example my 50mm lens has a minimum focus distance of 1.5ft, the 85mm - 2.8ft and the 100-300 - 4.9ft. (In general, the longer the focal length of the lens the greater the minimum focal distance.) An extension tube radically reduces that minimum focal distance. In fact it creates a focus zone, a fairly narrow focus zone, within which an object may be in focus. For example on the 50mm lens the minimum focus distance is reduced down to about 4 inches and the depth of field becomes so narrow that you'd best be pretty close to that distance when you attempt to focus the shot.

This fact is why the 25mm extension tube won't work with anything shorter than a 35mm lens because the focus zone is moved in so close the front glass element on the lens prevents you from getting that close.
