In a nutshell, 1) adjust exposure (curves) 2) color correction(channel mixer) 3) contrast(curves again) 4) toning(color balance)

OH! And when adjusting curves, especially if you prefer to be heavy on the contrast, the color of the image tends to be really saturated. Just use luminosity in blending mode to rid of the saturation but still maintaining contrast.
1. Dupe layer
2. Curves(or levels) on the duped layer
3. Change blending mode from normal to luminosity.
