Mas straightforward na ang THE LOBSTER sir kaysa Holy Motors. Basically, love story na siya in a dystopian future pero ang naka nindot niya kay whacked out kaayo ang pagka layout sa plot ug characters kay ang director mana sa Dogtooth (Yorgos Lanthimos), so you know nga dapat mag expect kag weirdness. hehehe. Naa baya siya bag-o movie nga nindot pud og reviews after screening sa Cannes last May, "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" ang title.
Wala pa ko kita anang Seklusyon. Apil man diay ni sa MMFF last year no?
In related news, New York film critics Manohla Dargis and AO Scott list 11 non-English language films as part of their 25 best films of the 21st century so far:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...t-century.html
Here's the controversial list; most of the foreign language films (with asterisk) I have recommended in this thread during previous years:
1. There Will Be Blood
*2. Spirited Away
3. Million Dollar Baby
*4. A Touch of Sin
*5. The Death of Mr Lazarescu
*6. Yi Yi
7. Inside Out
8. Boyhood
*9. Summer Hours
10. The Hurt Locker
11. Inside Llewyn Davis
*12. Timbuktu
13. In Jackson Heights
*14. L'Enfant
*15. White Material
16. Munich
*17. Three Times
*18. The Gleaners and I
19. Mad Max: Fury Road
20. Moonlight
21. Wendy and Lucy
22. I'm Not There
*23. Silent Light
24. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
25. The 40-Year Old Virgin
I think every cinephile has seen
Spirited Away.
A Touch of Sin is Jia Zhangke's masterpiece.
The Death of Mr Lazarescu may not necessarily be a great representative of the awesome Romanian Film New Wave (4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days, Beyond the Hills, or Police Adjective and Cristian Munguiu, Porumboiu more popular choices) but it is a fantastic film.
Yi Yi: A One and a Two is Edward Yang's modernistic masterpiece, but may not please everybody. The same goes for the pleasant French masterwork by Olivier Assayas,
Summer Hours.
Timbuktu, I have recommended this in previous pages, and it is a remarkable anti-war film.
The Belgian filmmakers, The Dardenne Brothers are represented in the list through
L'Enfant, which is great, but I still think their other film "Le Fils" (The Son, 2002) is a lot better. It's so great to see Claire Denis' powerful
White Material on the list. Hou Hsiao-hsien's
Three Times is also included, which is awesome even though I still think his newest film "The Assassin" is a lot superior.
Agnes Varda's
The Gleaners and I is a fantastic film, though you'll have to see her more popular film "Vagabond" to really appreciate her skills a lot more. While Carlos Reygada's
Silent Light is a beautiful film, I didn't really care too much about it (too much homage to Dreyer's films, plus many technical amateurish mistakes). It's still better than Post Tenebras Lux, though.
With regard to the English films, I always admired the power of filmmaking showcased in PTA's
There Will Be Blood, so it taking the top spot is great. Never really cared too much for
Inside Out,
Boyhood,
Munich, and
Moonlight.
