Btw, history as a subject is essential because we need to learn the lessons of the past to ensure we don't make the same mistakes again.

It is not in the mastery and fluency of the English language that serves as basis as to how smart or intelligent a person is.
yes we need tagalog but after elementary, students can already speak that language and some even fluently. many people who are not smart or intelligent land in a nice paying job like call centers because they speak the english language fluently even though they have taken their major subjects many times.

I agree, but if quality time is lost for simplistic subjects such as Filipino (actually Tagalog Grammar 101) intelligent persons will surely be heading to Dumbsville. There is so much to be learned about to keep at pace with the emerging trend in worldwide economy, which is the theme of this thread.

Why not our educators introduce philosophy (socratic to sartre philosophy is taught in Norwegian highschools), engineering or microbiology ug journalism sa elementary ug high school in lieu of tagalog grammar 101?

I think we should not about Filipino subjects in our curriculum. It's part of our identity and culture. El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere will have its use, if only we know how to analyze it in our own perspective.

Modernized education may be achieved in these days with the new projects of the government. I've recently heard of this cyber education which could help the youth in increasing the quality of education with new and innovative technologies. If only this will push through, we can increase the quality of education in the country.

Of course, we should not take for granted other key areas of education. Basic is the principle that we should encourage the students to prioritize their studies.

'Filipino' is the politically-correct term of tagalog imposed as the national language. bisan ihurot pa ug sagol ang bisaya words into the Filipino language, tagalog gihapon ang Filipino in essence, unless bisaya construction/grammar is also accepted. Sukad pa 1930's hangtod karon naglibog ilang kutaw nganong wa mo-saler ilang tagalog solusyon for homogenizing the whole archipelago for whatever purposes they had in mind. That some people just can't accept it, or find it utterly useless. But how can they find a solution if there was no problem in the first place? tupid! What's wrong with people speaking different languages, it's the true identity of the Filipinos. They might as well ask what's wrong with the rainbow it has many colors. Relative to the cebuanos, tagalog can be taught only as an elective, together with ilonggo, bicolano, ilocano, etc,... whichever the student wants to learn, why not? walay peboritism, ug walay pugsanay.
To modernize education, there are a lot of other useless subjects that are needed to get rid of, especially in post secondary levels. They are included in the curriculum to make well-rounded graduates kuno. So much for well-rounded graduates who can't find jobs because of sub-standard education by spending so much time in school learning nothing. Unya ulbo dayon ang kaspa makakita lang gani salida sa desperate housewives.

Filipino is a subject included in the curriculum of elementary, high school and college students. Most words, if not all, are Tagalog. This subject would only fit to be learned by students in the primary and secondary education. I think it is a redundant subject in college. Bisaya ko, although I find Tagalog useful, I am not fluent in speaking that dialect. I also found out nga sa college, most of my college classmates dili jud ganahan kana nga subject. Mura ra kuno og balik elementary then nag usik-usik sa tuition fee.

One thing sad kay the more Tagalog has been recognized as a"Filipino" official language, the more mga Tagalog mo-perceive sa ilang kaugalingon nga first-class citizens of the Philippines. that's what i think ambot sa inyo based lang sa akong experience.

English has become a common language to us Filipinos particularly sa mga Bisaya. But not all speak the language fluently. It is a language used in Commerce particularly in Accounting. it has also become a universal language. It is right nga Filipinos should learn more about this language. It is an official language of the Filipinos aside from Filipino which is based mostly in Tagalog.

The modernization of subjects can be done with most subjects in English. For me, dili angay na ubang subjects aside sa Filipino i translate og Tagalog.

if we want to have a sense of unity as a nation, then we must all learn English. Schools in the Philippines public or private should teach English to students extensively. learning English can help us learn other nationalities with english as a main language. It is also a way that we can be competitive economically and socially.

if we should modernize education, then we should also modernize Filipino as a subject, not abolish it.

Not only it is against the spirit of our constitution if we abolish subjects like Filipino or Philippine history, we can no longer really identify ourselves as Filipinos in mind and spirit if we lose our connection to the past, our language and values.

I agree that these subjects are not developing at all, that it's irrelevant to our curriculum especially to engineering students.
We just hear the same topics over and over again from elementary to college with hardly any advancement in our knowledge of the subject.
Therefore we should develop these subjects to be more relevant, if not more useful, to our rapidly changing generation and environment.
