    WHY SUPPLEMENT?

    In the U.S., the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is set at an intake that meets the nutrient needs of almost all (97 to 98 percent) individuals in that group (age, gender, pregnancy, lactation). Government recommendations in other countries are set up similarly, although they may go by different names.

    Be honest, do you eat perfectly every day, consistently, year after year? Do you know anybody who does? Your doctor or dietitian? Are you sure you’re getting adequate copper, or vitamin E, or vitamin B6, or other nutrients that may not be adequately provided by your typical daily diet?

    As it is designed, there is a percentage of the population (outliers) whose minimal needs are not being met by the RDA for a given nutrient. Even with your best intentions and practices, if you are human you are likely an outlier for something.

    Explanation of the graph: The Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) is the intake level for a nutrient at which the needs of 50 percent of the population will be met (which means it is even lower than the RDA). The black is the percentage of people still not meeting the EAR even considering fortified foods and supplements. The graph would likely look much worse if it included all the essential nutrients.

    Heart attacks, strokes surge during holidays.

    More people suffer from heart attack and stroke during the months of November and December due to the cold weather and the festivities that come with the Yuletide season, an expert from the Department of Health (DOH).

    According to Dr. Anthony Leachon, a cardiologist and a DOH consultant for non-communicable diseases, there are varying factors during these months that allow those with heart problems to suffer an attack.

    “Peak season is the last week of November to December to early January due to drop in temperature, over-indulgence, smoking and drinking during the holidays. More predisposed are those with risk factors already,” he said.

    He added there is no local study on this “but clinical experience shows an increasing trend now.”

    Citing an analysis in a British medical journal, he said call center agents are also more prone to developing heart attack and stroke because of the nature of their work. Deaths among them are also higher by 26 percent.

    “If you are on graveyard shift, your blood pressure, the clogging of the arteries and the increase in adrenaline take place from 4 to 8 a.m. At that moment, you should be asleep and your body rested. But it is not the case for many who work during this period,” he added.

    Experts warned that majority of deaths from heart attacks happen “during dawn when you are awake.”

    Experts urged the public to keep their immunity strong by eating healthy food, taking quality vitamins, avoiding smoking, and getting enough sleep.

    He said health should not be compromised and disregarded while celebrating the Christmas season.

    “The holiday season should not be an excuse for us to forget what foods are bad for our health. Partying is good but we still have to observe healthy lifestyle,” he added.

    "Mahal naman supplements eh"

    Yan din ang sabi ko dati but I realized that if I don't care about my health today, after 5 to 10 years I might pay for chemotherapy, major operations, expensive medicines and hospital bills.
    So I would rather take supplements now (of course I'm taking the BEST) for prevention rather than pay for hospitalization later.

    Sino ba ang dapat mag supplement?

    - people who are stressed
    - people who are affected by pollution, change of weather condition
