Roberto Orci Trying To 'Create A Universe' With Universal Monster Movie Reboots

The idea of creating shared universe for multiple characters and storylines isn't exactly a new concept - we've seen it an endless number of times on television (See: The Tommy Westphall Universe Hypothesis) and filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Kevin Smith have spent their careers creating small links between unrelated projects. By making the Marvel Cinematic Universe into one of the biggest film franchises in the world, however, Marvel Studios has made the "shared universe" idea more popular than ever. 20th Century Fox is working to bring together the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, Warner Bros. is finally getting around to pairing Batman and Superman in one movie, and now, outside of the superhero world, it's been revealed that Universal may have similar plans for the reboots of their classic monster movies.

At least that's the story being suggested by Roberto Orci, who, along with his screenwriting partner Alex Kurtzman, is currently attached to write the scripts for both the new versions of The Mummy and Van Helsing. Orci recently sat down with IGN for a video interview promoting the upcoming adaptation of Ender's Game, and during the discussion the writer revealed that there may be a chance that the remakes that Universal has in the works will all be part of a multi-franchise spanning collection. Said the writer,

"There’s an interesting thing that could happen at Universal where they have this amazing library of their old monsters and these kinds of heroes, and the idea of trying to create a universe. [We're doing] Van Helsing, and we’re also producing The Mummy for them. We’re kind of imagining updating these kinds of things. You don’t want to just make remakes when you’re doing a thing, unless it’s worthy of being a remake, but when you have an idea for something that can actually be made different and yet be true to what it was. We just had a notion of how to make it modern and have a slightly different tone. It’s not going to be just a remake."

Alex Kurtzman to Direct 'The Mummy' Reboot

He is already producing the creature feature with Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel.

Alex Kurtzman is in final negotiations to direct Universal’s reboot of The Mummy.

Kurtzman, who with former writing partner Roberto Orci wrote some of the biggest franchise players in the past decade, already is producing the movie with Chris Morgan. Kurtzman and Morgan are weaving together a cinematic universe for Universal based on its movie monsters properties, and Mummy is due to be the first one out of the gate, with a release date of April 22, 2016. The movie is important as it will set the tone and stage for the rest of the universe.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it’s understood that the new Mummy is set in the present and is not a horror play but rather an action-adventure tentpole with horror elements. It also will feature new characters and not rehash previous incarnations.
Jon Spaihts worked on the script, as did Kurtzman and Orci. Sean Daniel also is a producer on the project. Bobby Cohen is executive producer.
The project already has gone through a couple of directors — Len Wiseman and Andy Muschietti (Mama) — but that was before Universal began implementing its master monster plan.

“Over the course of developing The Mummy, Alex has demonstrated such clarity and passion about this character and mythology," said co-president of production Jeff Kirschenbaum. "He knows why The Mummy has fascinated us for so long and how to bring that into an inventive, incredible new adventure. It became obvious that he is the perfect choice to be not only one of the narrative engineers of this new vision but its director as well.”

Kurtzman made his directorial debut with the modestly budgeted drama People Like Us, which starred Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks, so Mummy would mark a significant leap in terms of budget and scope. He also is attached to direct Venom, the Spider-Man spinoff, for Sony, though that project is not on the studio’s release calendar for the foreseeable future.

Tom Cruise Brings Star Power To Universal's 'Mummy' Reboot

After months of rumors and denials and more rumors going back to last Thanksgiving, Tom Cruise is officially starring in Universal’s The Mummy. The reboot/remake/etc. of the classic 1932 Boris Karloff horror movie, which itself was rebooted into an enormously successful fantasy action franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in 1999, is supposed to be the start of what Universal hopes will be its connected universe mythology involving their classic monsters library. The film, produced by Alex Kurtzman, Chris Morgan, and Sean Daniel, directed by Alex Kurtzman, and written by Jon Spaihts, will presumably be the first in an ongoing series of action-centric horror/fantasy films that will theoretically be the equivalent of Walt Disney DIS +2.13% Marvel Cinematic Universe and/or Warner Bros./Time Warner TWX +1.45% Inc.’s DC Comics movie world.

And as such, getting a movie star like Tom Cruise on-board is a gigantic coup for the first shot across the bow. Moving the film from March 24, 2017 to June 9, 2017 doesn’t hurt either, although these days I wonder which release date is “better.” But yeah, this is another reaction to Disney moving Star Wars Episode VIII from May 2017 to December 2017. If this casting, along with Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond) as the title villain, is any indication of plans going forward, then it would appear that Universal is trying to get outright movie stars to headline their monster movies. There was talk awhile back about Angelina Jolie headlining The Bride of Frankenstein, so the confirmation that Cruise is aboard The Mummy would seem to indicate that said rumor at least has a shot at coming to fruition, especially if there are any By the Sea-type passion projects that need funding.

We will see what kind of above-the-line stars Universal can snag for their Wolf Man (March 30, 201 and their presumed Frankenstein/Dracula/etc. projects that hope to follow every year until we all perish. Of course, the 1930′s/1940′s Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe was itself the first “connected cinematic universe” as Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster and the rest periodically popped up in”X meets Y” movies back in the proverbial day. I have no word on who Universal might cast as terrifying monsters Abbott and Costello. Anyway, whatever my misgivings about the idea (please don’t make these monsters into anti-heroic superheroes), going with recognizable names beyond just the classic monster is the logical way to differentiate your connected universe from the likes of Marvel or Star Wars.

And yeah, it’s a little dispiriting that Tom Cruise, who turns 52 this year, will be joining a character/concept-centric franchise as something of a hired gun and basically do the swashbuckling thing that Brendan Fraser did so well when he was just 30. But if this means that Universal might be willing to distribute more along the lines of next year’s Mena, then perhaps it won’t be in vein. Anyway, beyond that I don’t have anything else to offer, other than to again remind you that Universal swears up-and-down that Dracula Untold doesn’t count. So if that’s the case, even though the $70 million picture earned $214m worldwide in 2014, you can forget about Luke Evans starring in Dracula In Need Of Clarification, Dracula Merely Hinted At, and Dracula Told In Detail But You Weren’t Listening.

The Mummy will now open June 9, 2017 at a theater near you courtesy of Universal.
