seen it. good char development for most of the heroes. Rey is fantastic, Poe is cool and Han was awesome. the action scenes were good and the lightsaber duel was fine. excellent visuals for the most part. now to the bad. I thought the plot was pretty stupid.

so in the opening crawl it says that Luke has disappeared, and that Leia and the First Order are looking for him. we are then later told that Luke vanished because he failed when Ben Solo(Kylo Ren) went full FEDORA EDGELORD. Luke feels responsible for Ben's fall to the dark side. so what does he do? does he go after Kylo Ren, turn him back to the light side or destroy him and the First Order? NO. instead of rectifying his mistake, he runs away and hides in some obscure corner of the galaxy. Luke Skywalker is now completely ruined.

the Resistance, now led by General Leia Organa, is looking for Luke so that he can help restore peace and order in the galaxy. you have to wonder what these chucklef---- have been doing all this time. they can't just rely on Luke to save the day every time, they should've made their own defensive measures against any threats. maybe make their own Death Star.

now the First Order. they're looking for Luke too. what a bunch of knuckleheads. instead of wasting time and resources looking for Luke, they should just make Luke come to them and let the Resistance do their work for them. meanwhile they can make the Republic submit to their will by using the third Death Star to destroy all pro-Republic systems. and by the time the Resistance has found Luke, it would be too late. but nah, they decided to look for Luke too, which eventually led to the predictable destruction of the third Death Star and their defeat. good job, idiots.

they either could have just had the Death Star be the McGuffin where Poe is trying to discover its location and Kylo comes after him to keep him from spilling the beans on the base' coordinates. as for Luke, they can just say he disappeared 20 years ago for who knows what reason, maybe he felt a disturbance in the Force and sought to uncover it. or maybe he wants to be the last of the Jedi/Force users and so he went into seclusion. and Kylo doesn't really need to have a master-apprentice connection with Luke, just say that he was a force sensitive child who idolized his uncle, but was frustrated because he has no one to teach him its ways. then Snoke appears and takes him away from Han and Leia, and is taught the Force and the dark side.

it seems to me that not a lot of effort was put into writing the story, but maybe because in this day and age you don't have to. people will eat anything up as long as it doesn't have Mila Kunis and Chaning Tatum.

he's a Stormtrooper. he was raised to be a cold-blooded killing machine in the First Order's Evil Stormtrooper Academy. it's also logical to think that they would test their Stormtroopers by having them kill the helpless/innocents so that they can weed out the good ones from the bad. in the movie, Finn decides to rebel because he couldn't stomach what they're doing, because he's... a good guy? how did he pass the final Evil Stormtrooper Academy exams? wtf. it would have made sense if he enlisted to become a Stormtrooper, believing that the Galactic Empire bought peace and order to the galaxy, and then realizing that they did so by using inhumane methods, that this wasn't what he signed up for. and so he deserts.

another thing, he's supposed to be a good guy, but he didn't have a problem shooting his fellow Stormtroopers down at the start. these were the guys who he had trained with since he was a kid, and he just guns them down like nothing. "nothing personnel, kid." I think him hesitating to shoot his former comrades would have added more to his character, and he would only come to terms with fighting his former comrades during the raid of the Pirate Base. it would've also been more interesting if the guy he had a one on one fight with was a friend of his. that would have given that fight actual emotion and weight. or they could have had Phasma there instead. it would've been interesting if her and Finn actually were friends and trained together, but because she was talented she rose to the ranks much faster. and so when he deserts it really hits her hard. so when they eventually confront each other there would be that weight and emotion to the fight, and it would also give Phasma something to do besides being the butt of a joke at the end.

the villains were pretty underwhelming. Kylo was interesting and pathetic at the same time. I think he'll become more legitimate in future movies instead of just a "CRAWLING IN MY SKIN" angsty "I HATE MY PARENTS" mental teenager. I find it funny that his idol is Darth Vader and he is literally just like Anakin in II. General Hux was hilarious. I laughed when he was making his speech. Gleeson seems to be hamming it up. and Captain Phasma was wasted. next Boba Fett my a--. if they had that intention for the character going in, they should have done it in this movie and not the next.

finally, this movie clings on to the Original Trilogy too much. as cool as it is to see Han, Chewy, Luke, the Millennium Falcon again, I'd rather if that part of the story ended in Jedi. the theme in the movie is about letting go and moving forward, this is clearly seen in the characters of Rey, Finn, Kylo and Han. so, it's pretty funny that the new trilogy itself continues to hold on to the past rather than going forward and making something new. unfortunately it already looks like VIII will be derivative of Empire. Jar Jar Abrams and co seem to really love their poetry. the poetry is strong in this one. and it rhymes too.

all in all a pretty mediocre movie, but it was entertaining. I... had fun. would recommend to casual movie goers.
