APPROVED RULE CHANGES 2007-2008

THREE POINT LINE
OLD: PBA 3-point line – 22 feet from the basket.

NEW: FIBA 3-point line – 6.25 meters or 20 feet and 6 inches from the basket

HAND CHECK

OLD: A defensive player is not permitted to retain hand contact with an offensive player when the player is in his "sights". Hand checking will be eliminated by rigid enforcement of this rule by officials. The illegal use of hands will not be permitted.

NEW: A defensive player is not permitted to retain hand contact with an offensive player when the player is in his “sights� except when such hand contact is NOT deemed by the game officials as impeding the progress of the offensive player, in which case it will be allowed.

BASKETBALL INTERFERENCE/GOAL TENDING

OLD: (a) A player shall not touch the ball when it is within the imaginary “cylinder� having the basket rim as its lower base

(b) A player shall not touch the ball when it is above the basket ring and within the imaginary cylinder.

NEW: Any player may touch the ball after it hits the ring during an attempt. In effect, imaginary ring cylinder is hereby removed.

All existing basket interference restrictions apply until the ball hits the ring.

RESTRICTED ZONE MEASUREMENT

OLD: The PBA restricted area is a rectangle measuring 16’ x 18’-10� (301.44 sq. ft.)

NEW: FIBA restricted area. Trapezoid measuring 3.6 meters (12 feet) wide at the free throw line and 6 meters wide (19 ft. and 8.25 inches) at the baseline (298.54 sq. ft.)

TWO (2) TEAM FOULS IN THE LAST TWO MINUTES

In the last two (2) minutes of the fourth period, the second team foul incurred by a team during this period shall result in free throws for the opposing team. The second team foul shall also automatically put that team in a penalty situation.

PENALTY SITUATION DURING OVERTIME

OLD: The first two fouls committed by a team in any overtime period shall result in the ball being awarded at the sideline nearest where personal foul occurred. Team fouls charged to a team in excess of two will be penalized by 2 free throws.

NEW: The number of team fouls committed in the fourth period shall be carried over to the overtime period.

Any extra period will be considered as an extension of the fourth period as far as the number of team fouls and the penalty situation rule are concerned.
The number of team fouls allowed in overtime period before a team gets into penalty situation is the same in the fourth period which is 5 team fouls.
