Help, my beagle has heartworm. Advice and tips.

Unfortunately my dog was recently diagnosed with heartworm. almost 6 years old and is already feeling very weak.
We were not aware of this lethal disease so we were not able to give prevention meds in the past. We also discovered how expensive it is to treat. So I'm here asking for advice on what's the best and most affordable way to treat this disease to increase my beagle's chance of survival.
