7 hurt as twister destroys 150 houses, mosque, school in North Cotabato
PIKIT, North Cotabato -- A twister swept through three interior villages of Pikit town late Thursday afternoon, injuring seven residents and destroying 152 houses, mosque and a school, an official said.
Tahira Kalatongan of the Pikit municipal disaster risk reduction and management council, said in a radio interview that the twister struck Barangays Manaulanan, Punol and Pamalian at past 3 p.m.
The injured residents were hit by flying debris, mostly house materials and fallen tree branches, Kalatongan said.
Kalantongan also said more than 100 families affected by the twister have been given relief assistance.
She said twisters normally occur in the Maguindanao marshland but this was the worst, very strong that it toppled trees.
In nearby Pagalungan and Datu Montawal municipalities in Maguindanao, the strong winds at the height of a heavy downpour toppled acacia trees and banana plants along portions of the Cotabato-Davao highway, causing an hour-long traffic jam.
