Addressing workers' demands, President Arroyo also said that a bill would be submitted to Congress calling for the increase in the salaries of government employees.
"Pending the passage of the bill, the DBM (Department of Budget and Management) shall study a transitional relief package for government workers to help them cope with rising prices," she added.
Concerning private sector employees, Arroyo said she ordered Santo Tomas to direct the regional wages boards to convene and issue wage orders in 30 days "with or without petitions from the laborers."
Workers in the audience applauded her speech, and ended the forum with a cheer praising Arroyo.
According to Santo Tomas, only two wage hike petitions have been submitted before the regional wage boards of Metro Manila (P78 per day) and Western Visayas (P100 per day).
The relief package for government workers, meanwhile, will include additional health benefits, transportation support, and a provident fund. She said Budget Secretary Emilia Boncodin will submit the package within the month. (AP/With Sunnex Luzon)
