Killer Shipman 'murdered 250 patients'
Killer GP Harold Shipman killed a total of about 250 patients over a 27-year period stretching back to 1971.
The final report into his crimes examined his actions during his time training as a student doctor at Pontefract General Infirmary.
Shipman: The Final Report found that Dr Shipman killed up to 15 patients while he trained as a hospital doctor more than 30 years ago.
The deaths occurred between 1971 and 1974 at Pontefract General Infirmary in West Yorkshire, according to the sixth report of the Shipman Inquiry.
Inquiry chairman Dame Janet Smith said today that suspicion surrounded a number of other deaths.
In today's report Dame Janet said: "My overall conclusion, therefore, is that Shipman killed about 250 patients between 1971 and 1998."
Dame Janet concluded that Shipman unlawfully killed three men in this time, but added that there was "quite serious suspicion" about four other deaths, including that of four-year-old Susan Garfitt in 1972.
She said there were a further 17 deaths where there was "some suspicion that Shipman might have been involved in causing the deaths".
Inquiry chairman Dame Janet Smith is also ruling on claims that Shipman confessed his crimes to an inmate at HMP Preston.
He was convicted of drug offences in 1976 after becoming addicted to pethidine as a young doctor, but he was allowed to carry on practising by the General Medical Council (GMC).
He was jailed for life in January 2000 after being convicted at Preston Crown Court of 15 murders.
The 57-year-old was found hanged in his cell in Wakefield Prison in January last year.
The Shipman Inquiry was ordered by the Government in February 2000. It has already found that Shipman murdered at least 215 patients with lethal morphine injections in a 23-year killing spree while working at a one-man GP practice in Hyde. This is the sixth report.
During the inquiry, questions were raised about a further 137 deaths at Pontefract General Hospital between 1970 and 1974, when Shipman worked there as a junior doctor.
In April last year the inquiry announced it would rule on the deaths.
It also said it would investigate a further three cases in Hyde, as well as an alleged confession by Shipman while he was in prison in Preston.
