How does Melatonin work?

i have tried melatonin but not so impressed with it. sometimes i need to take 2 at the same time coz if i take 1, i would have a hard time getting back to sleep if i had to wake up and pee. i would recommend anti allergy tabs.. . .benadryl is the best. or any anti allergy tabs where diphenhydramine is present.
