Been out for almost a year here in istorya til I saw this topic..

    Just sharin my 2 cents:
    1. If you're gonna do poultry, become a contract grower!! Its not rocket science, but it does require some capital.. However, rate of return is really good (in fact, no poultry contract grower (tunnel ventilated) with loans from the 3 major banks here in the Phils. have turned past-due to-date..)
    Basic requirements -
    a. 1 hectare lot (10,000 sqm) agri lot with water and electricity supply. At least 1km away from residential areas.
    b. poultry house w/ tunnel ventilation that will hold 36,000 heads (chix) -costs around P10M
With tunnel ventilation, harvest rate should not go below 93% (meaning your mortality rate should not go over 7%). With every chick, average income is about P15.00 (conservative), so gross income per harvest (29 days) is about P502k. And since this is contract growing wherein your "Integrator" provides you the days old chix, feeds and medicines, your basic opex is just electricity and manpower (4 guys).. Net should be around P250k/ harvest (very conservative)... THere's a lot of things I'd like to elaborate but maybe later when time permits...
Point is, with contract growing you wont be subjected to the price volatility of chickens since there's a pricing scheme provided by your contractor (Bounty, San Miguel, Gamma)

    2. Backyard poultry - forget it!! Harvest rate will never reach 86%... Since your chix will be open to the changing weather temperatures, more than often, they clump around each other with those on the sides left to die... And with you buying the feeds, medicines, etc.. the time and effort is just not worth it... plus of course your susceptible to the market prices volatility of chickens (unless you have a contract with your buyer)..
As the saying goes "cheaper by the dozen", laws of economics will always dictate that the big fries (Magnolia, Bounty, etc.) can always sell cheaper chickens with you being railroaded in the pricing scheme (in general).

These are just my personal views and hoping to have shed some light on the subject..
