THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will hold a public hearing on Dec. 17 for the petition of former Cebu City councilor Augusto Pe Jr. to reduce the minimum jeepney fare rate from P7.50 to P7.
The hearing will be held at the LTFRB conference room at 9 a.m.
Being the petitioner, Pe will have to publish notices of the hearing in local newspapers 15 days before the date of hearing.
Pe filed his petition before the LTFRB last Nov. 21, asking the agency to lower the minimum jeepney fare back to P7 for the first five kilometers.
He also said that as of Nov. 18, 2014, the price of diesel ranged from P34.40 to P37.50 per liter.
LTFRB 7 Acting Director Rey Elnar said those invited to the hearing are groups of workers, students, professionals, drivers, and operators, among others.
Romeo Armamento of the National Confederation of Transport Unions urged LTFRB to also invite the important stakeholders of the transport industry.
“If would be better if LTFRB would also invite fuel dealers so we can ask why prices are fluctuating,” Armamento said.
Greg Perez of Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide said LTFRB should consider that oil companies are controlling the prices because of the Oil Deregulation Law.
“What if after reducing the fare, oil companies will increase the diesel price to P40?,” Perez said.
Benjamin Ryan Yu, the chairman of Cebu Integrated Transport Service Cooperative, said they will abide with whatever decision the LTFRB will render on Pe’s petition.
“We just have hesitations because when the time comes to increase the fare, LTFRB becomes remiss in their duty,” Yu said.
