the anime and manga industry generally have 5 demographic groups (target audience nila): kodomo, shounen, shoujo, seinen, josei

kodomo - kids, children
shounen - boys. usually action, friendship, humor. example: naruto, bleach, one piece
shoujo - girls. usually idealistic romance and emotions, and usually female lead character. example: fushigi yuugi, ouran high school club, sailor moon
seinen - young adult male. emphasis usually on storyline and character development. example: ghost in the shell, black lagoon, elfen lied
josei - young adult female. usually realistic romance and more mature storytelling compared to shoujo. example: honey and clover, nana, usagi drop

of course, generalities ra ni. there can be shounen with great storyline and character development like fullmetal alchemist, and some seinen can be action-packed like cowboy bebop or can be slapstick comedy with no adult characters like azumanga daioh.

btw, examples akong gipanghatag are animes (some have manga counterparts), since di ayo ko tingbasa og manga.
