Houston Rockets trade Jeremy Lin to Los Angeles Lakers
The Houston Rockets have traded point guard Jeremy Lin and a future first-round pick to the Los Angeles Lakers for cash considerations, a person with knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the trade has not been made official.
The deal initially was broached when the Rockets were in talks with Miami Heat free agent big man Chris Bosh. Lin is estimated to be due nearly $15 million next season, but only $8 million count against the salary cap because of the way his contract was structured. The Rockets needed all the salary cap help they could get, while the Lakers had plenty of room to spare.
Bosh, though, agreed Friday to re-sign with the Heat for five years and $118 million. And the Lin trade stood, allowing Houston to clear space for another free agency pursuit or perhaps simply to keep restricted free agent small forward Chandler Parsons, who has a qualifying offer of $46 million over three years from the Dallas Mavericks. The Rockets have until Sunday afternoon to match the offer
The Lakers get a scoring point guard who doubles as one of the NBA's most popular players. Lin took the league by storm in February 2012, when he led an injury-deprecated New York Knicks team to seven consecutive wins and averaged 24.4 points a game during the streak.
That play inspired the Rockets to outbid the Knicks for Lin's services. But he never fit next to shooting guard James Harden, with both being ball-dominant attacking players who struggled on defense. As a result, Lin lost his starting role last season despite decent offensive numbers.
The Lakers have four point guards who could get playing time: often-injured former NBA MVP Steve Nash, pass-happy Kendall Marshall (whose contract is not fully guaranteed), rookie combo guard Jordan Clarkson and Lin. They re-signed scoring wing Nick Young and aggressive big man Jordan Hill as well Friday.
The moves suggest the Lakers have given up on landing any big-fish free agents this summer. Lin's contract expires after this season, and Hill's deal has a team option for a second year. The Lakers should have plenty of salary cap space next year and again in 2016, when a number of big-name free agents hit the market.
