Marimar takes Davao by storm

Her presence was meant to complete GMA 7’s stellar line-up, but Davao’s response to her disarming charm was beyond expectation.
“I never thought Marimar would be this big in Davao. She’s a phenomenon,” Jocelyn Bautista, GMA Network’s program manager for Regional Entertainment TV whispered almost to herself when she saw the crowd that recently packed the NCCC Mall Activity Center in Davao City.
A crowd estimate of 11,000 trooped to the Kapuso mall show hosted by GMA 7’s local variety show Kuyaw! which featured the tandem of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, now known as the Pinay Marimar and Sergio.
The Davao gig was both a first for Marian and Dingdong and their Dabawenyo fans did not disappoint them as they received a warm welcome.
The four walls of the venue shook almost violently as the crowd screamed in unison after the funny tandem of Belli Flori and Cookie (John Feir and Pekto Nacua) introduced Dingdong first.
Tall, tan and handsome, as described by his fans, Dingdong had every female in the audience screaming when he went on stage to perform a rock song. After rendering three songs — all of which were received with lusty applause — Dingdong introduced Marian, sending the audience into frenzy anew.
The tandem’s magnetic chemistry dazzled and tickled the audience, so much so that the slightest of smiles, shrieks and screams punctured the air every time the hosts teased the two.
By the time they performed their Marimar dance number, Marian and Dingdong had thoroughly soaked into their Marimar and Sergio characters. They had the crowd at the palm of their hands, clamoring for a piece of their reel affection right before their very eyes. Hence, the two brought the house down when they kissed not only once but twice, much to the thrill of the audience.
The mall show was part of the Kapuso network’s participation in the Kadayawan weekend which kicked off with a Kapuso Day that saw some of the network’s stars dropping by the Durian Republic for a day of fun, entertainment and public service.
The day before the Marimar mall show, a Grand Kapuso Day was held with an approximate of 12,700 people in attendance.
No less than the cast of Kung Mahawi Man Ang Ulap was present, led by Dennis Trillo, Iwa Moto, Nadine Samonte and Chuck Allie. The quartet took turns manning the Drama booth wherein their fans had the chance to get their photos taken with their idols.
Kapuso collectible items were also given away.
Keempee de Leon, host of Kung Ako Ikaw, shared the Comedy booth chores with Eat, Bulaga!’s Pauleen Luna. Meanwhile, Q-11’s Manilyn Reynes was also a hit in the Variety booth.
Mall traffic during the Davao Kapuso Day celebration was placed at 50,355. The figure ballooned to a whopping 66,573 the following day, the scheduled Marimar mall show.
On the day of the Kadayawan Float Parade, the Marimar float was one of the most applauded.
Marian and Dingdong rode on the float that cruised Davao City’s main thoroughfares. They were seen tirelessly waving to screaming fans, handing out freebies. Whenever the Marimar theme was played, the tandem readily danced to the beat.
“They seemed indefatigable. So you can see how happy the people are in seeing them. For the first time, I see people running after a float,” said Jocelyn Bautista.
Katrina Halili and Michael V. shared the ride with the lead stars. Both were warmly cheered by the audience as well, further proof that Marimar has captivated Davao and the neighboring provinces, too.
It was definitely an unforgettable Kapuso weekend experience as Dabawenyos were treated to quality entertainment, fun and lots of freebies. Aside from the collectibles, free haircut, free picture-taking and free legal consultation were also rendered.
Local talents shared the spotlight with Manila artists and personalities.
Testigo’s anchor Tek Ocampo and Suzie Rexrodt led the job fair opening while the hosts of local variety show Kuyaw! including Bea, Nico, Kristine, Krystal, Richelle, Ado, Esperanza, Irish and Marvin John were busy attending to on-ground activities and took turns in hosting the mall show.
Kuyaw! is GMA Davao’s Sunday late-morning musical-variety-travel show that helps discover new local talents. It offers wholesome, exciting segments, making it the No. 1 program in its timeslot.
Some of its segments are Made in UK, which addresses problems of letter-senders about fashion, beauty, health, wellness, etc.; Kuyaw Exposed features accomplishments and achievements of Kapusong Dabawenyos in their respective fields of endeavor; Artist Avenue is an MTV-style segment which features local artists; and Sikarahay showcasing the recipe of the best cook in a barangay. The segment host rides a trisikad which has all the kitchen equipment.
Meanwhile, Testigo is GMA’s local newscast. It recently underwent a soft reformat that further intensified its commitment to public service, making it the must-see evening primetime newscast in Davao.
From its current assembly — Pulis Blotter, Balitang Business, Oplan Kapuso, Balitang Sports, Panahon Karon, Suroy Ta!, Special Report — exciting new segments were added to become integral parts of Testigo.
Kastigador heads the list of these new segments. It is an investigative segment tackling the week’s hottest issues. Meanwhile, RGMA’s popular radio anchor Super Jun Digamon is at the helm of Birada, an in-depth analysis of the prevailing news.
Health Tips is another novelty which is fast-gaining a following of its own.
Viewers are now more active in Testigo’s text hotline. This is where the audience can suggest improvements to the program or suggest topics to be discussed by both Kastigador and Birada.
It was a memorable Kapuso experience not only for Dabawenyos but for everyone who braved the rain and traffic to take part in the series of events GMA 7 has prepared for them. It was the weekend when GMA 7 paid tribute to all Kapusong Dabawenyos, towing Marimar no less — a weekend that left everyone happily exhausted and exhilarated.
