    Historically it is important for the brits to maintain naval (and later on, Aerial) superiority while maintaining a capable army, because they are separated from the rest of Europe, against the barbarian hordes, the French and Spanish, The Germans twice. It is their formula to avoiding being invaded. Now, with the advent of ICBMs, it will add a new dimension to the UK's defensive formula. They really can't afford to lose naval dominance against the Sov...I mean Russians.
