Op-Ed: Mayweather-Maidana fight needs massive promotions to sell on PPV

    By: LEO REYES

If not for its main supporting bouts that include Amir Khan and Adien Boner, the upcoming Mayweather-Maidana fight scheduled for May 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena won't sell on pay-per-view because of the perceived mismatch of the main fight.
Mayweather has been widely criticized for choosing Marcos Maidana for his May 3 ring return with some fans calling for a boycott of the fight.
With less than two weeks before the fight, the odds showed a 12-1 ratio in favor of Mayweather, confirming boxing fans' observation that the fight is indeed a mismatch.
Mayweather has been criticized for ducking worthy opponents while choosing less competitive fighters to secure his unblemished professional fight record.
Although Maidana has won four successive fights since losing to Devon Alexander in 2012, boxing experts and fight analysts are saying that Maidana will hardly win a single round against Mayweather.
"He has no shot to beat Mayweather and I'll be shocked if he wins more than a single round of the 12 that I anticipate the fight will go," Frank Lotierzo wrote on his Feb 26 column in The Sweet Science.
"There will never be an iota of drama in this bout as to who will win, it will be a conclusive boxing lesson administered to Maidana by Mayweather from start to finish. If you are hoping to see drama or an upset, keep going, because there is nothing to see here," he added.
Maidana shared the limelight with marquee fighters when he handed the young, unbeaten Adrien Broner late last year via a unanimous decision to register his four-fight winning streak.
After his bout with Broner, who recently made it to Ring's pound-for-pound list, Maidana was preparing for a rematch with Broner when Mayweather surprised his fans after dropping Amir Khan for his May 3 fight and replaced him with Maidana despite fan preference for Khan as shown in a poll conducted on Mayweather's website.
Manny Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum, who once promoted Mayweather early in his pro career, told media during the Pacquiao-Bradley fight last April 12, that it is clearly a mismatch, referring to the 15-1 (now 21-1) odds favoring Mayweather.
Although Arum called for a boycott of the May 3 fight for another reason (to force a Pacquiao fight on Mayweather), his call may affect Mayweather's pay-per-view revenue as fans may be influenced by Arum's call.
But Mayweather seems to have anticipated Arum's tirade by assembling a powerhouse undercard to offset the perceived mismatch.
In the May 3 undercard, Mayweather is presenting Amir Khan vs. Luis Collazo, Adrien Broner vs. Carlos Molina and J’Leon Love vs.Marco Antonio Periban.
The Mayweather-Maidana fight card needs to be advertised and heavily promoted in order to offset the negative perception of the fans on the "Mayweather-Maidana mismatch."

Bob Arum Sounds off on Potential Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Fight

Boxing promoter Bob Arum never shies away from giving his opinion.

That much was evident in the wee hours of Sunday morning, when the Top Rank CEO gave his thoughts on a potential matchup between his client, Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs), and undefeated champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (45-0-0, 26 KOs).
Arum was not satisfied with Pacquiao’s revenge victory over Timothy Bradley and isn't pleased with the state of boxing. He also discussed a potential Mayweather vs. Pacquiao showdown.

According to Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix, Arum started by noting the MGM’s decision to put up signs promoting Mayweather’s bout with Marcos Maidana (35-3-0, 31 KOs) on May 3:
The 82-year-old promoter isn’t known for his filter, which was evident when he said the signs were encouraging fans to waste money on “crap”:
Arum hoped the media would bash Mayweather’s clash with Maidana:
He did that to set up arguably the most interesting point of his post-fight comments. Arum believes people should boycott the May 3 bout if they have any interest in seeing Pac-Man and Money step into the ring:

Arum also claimed he is standing by to negotiate the details for this possible superfight between the two biggest stars in the sport:

The promoter wound down with a call to action, urging Mayweather to admit his upcoming fight is nothing more than a tuneup and sign on to battle Pac-Man this coming fall:

While Arum says he is willing to work out the details to get the two marquee pugilists in the squared circle, the odds of it happening are slim.

According to the Jeff Powell of the Daily Mail, Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, believes Mayweather will not agree to any sort of fight where his undefeated record would truly be on the line:

Roach went on to note that there was a point about two years ago where it looked like Top Rank and Golden Boy, the company that represents Mayweather’s boxing interests, would actually strike a deal, but things quickly went south.

However, there is still a bit of time to potentially iron out the details of this superfight.

Arum clued Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix in on a two-year contract extension he is working on with Pac-Man, while many, including Roach, believe Mayweather will try to match and possibly even surpass Hall of Famer Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 record before he retires.
Arum is trying to give the fans the matchup they have been clamoring for.

Perhaps we will have a better idea of where Pacquiao and Mayweather stand after the Maidana fight. But Pac-Man is 35 years old, and Mayweather is 37, so time is running out.
