One of the difficulties in assessing any "language level" is the parameters by which one defines "proficiency".

The "GlobalEnglish" study regarding English Level cited above (GlobalEnglish Business English Index Reveals Skills Shortage and Unequal Odds for International Business Success in 2012) is an interesting one to consider as it fails to define to the lay viewer what it means by "global worker". For example, a significant percentage of the foreign workforce in Australia are British and American, yet, as native speakers of English they would not be included in the study. This means that the ranking for Australia is lower than the reality.

Another key point the study fails to investigate is that it only assesses individual "global worker" competency. It does not give any indication of the English level of the actual working environment. Thus, an office of 50 people with 90% native English speakers, but only 10% "global workers" will have a very higher average standard of workplace business English, yet there are only 5 "global workers" to survey. On the other hand a workplace of only 10 people, none of whom are natives, will register on such a survey very differently.

Thanks Thomas Mole! What a fascinating study.

Having read the press release of the company that ran the study, it doesn't really go into much detail about the parameters of the study, but does mention that just over 100,000 "global workers" (whatever that means) in 76 countries were surveyed.

So this one study (not "studies") shows the Phillipines as number 1... and yet this study also included the USA and Canada... wow that is incredible!

The UK didn't even make the top ten!

It is amazing the things you can find on the internet.

pero just put this in mind bro ts, whatever rank we have, whatever
accent we have, we don't have the same choice of words the native
english speakers use. mao bisan maayo pa ta mo english and neutral kaayo tag
accent, each westerners know that we dont have the english tongue.

take for example my experience with japanese people, they are not as fluent
as we are, they are not even talkative as we are, but when they do, you can
notice that grammar-wise, they exceptionally are better than us in english.

so mao kana cya, maski unsa ka kadugay sa usa ka bpo, pero your customers know
nga dili gyud ka amerkano. if you want to improve your english communication skills,
you have to indulge in every corner of it. kana ug mao ra gyud nay importante nimo.
otherwise, as long as you can understand what they mean with what they say kung
asa man gani ka ron, then you're good to go with yes-no.

PS: i dont believe in those surveys. really now.
