MALACANANG on Thursday announced that the 28th anniversary celebration of the Edsa People Power Revolution on February 25 will be held in Cebu province.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the original plan to hold the commemorative events, such as the Salubungan, in Malacanang was shelved.

"The traditional 'Salubungan' or commemoration of the meeting between the civilian and military participants of Edsa People Power will be held on Tuesday morning at the Cebu provincial capitol grounds," he said.

Cebu was chosen as venue because the province was the bulwark of the opposition to the dictatorship during the martial law regime, Coloma said. It was in Cebu City where Mrs. Corazon Aquino, President Benigno Aquino III's mother, was staying when the military broke ranks from then President Ferdinand Marcos on February 22, 1986, he added.

Last Sunday, Coloma announced over Radyo ng Bayan that the commemoration of the Edsa People Power Revolution would be held at the Malacanan Palace grounds and not anymore in Edsa so that the celebration would not cause additional burden to the motorists. He said this was based on an advisory from the Edsa People Power Commission (EPPC).

However, he said the President met last Monday with Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, EPPC chair, and conveyed his decision to revisit the areas affected by recent natural calamities before he leaves for his official visit to Malaysia on February 27-28.

"Considering that the theme for this year’s celebration is, 'Kapit-Bisig Tungo sa Pagbangon', the President said it was important to rally the people in the calamity-affected areas to rekindle the spirit of Edsa People Power in building back better communities," Coloma said.

The President also plans to revisit Leyte and Eastern Samar to check on the progress of government’s recovery and rehabilitation efforts. Also being considered are visits to Bohol which sustained heavy earthquake damage last October and Davao Oriental which bore the brunt of super-typhoon Pablo in December 2012.

I think it's but fitting and proper that Edsa People Power commemoration be held in Cebu. The Cebuanos aplayed a major role as the premier opposition during the Marcos regime.

i don't get it, why here? and correction, cory did not stay here for any other reason, she hid here because she was afraid of marcos. The people of Manila initiated Edsa Revolution, not by any politician not even cory herself.

Cebuanos don't want or give crap about EDSA, we want a separate sovereign state, free from Manila's political hullabaloo!
