    BARAKA

A movie without dialogue nor a plot. In my understanding, I guess it is meant to be like that so that we will appreciate what nature can offer and what civilization has done so far through the passage of time. The movie also provided us a glimpse of the self destructive nature of humanity. It is a good piece for film discussion.

Anyway, we are all free to interpret its message and even make a plot out of it. There are footages and scenes that I bet you have never encountered with any other movie or in real life that can only be seen in "Baraka"

"Baraka" is a universal language that means "blessings".

The cinematography is breathtaking. 5 Star.

Default Japanese film festival, starting at July 22 at Ayala Cinema 4

i know this is late notice but just wanted to post it so whoever is interested can still catch up. it's the last day today.

A taste of the finest in Japanese cinema
Japan Film Festival opens Oct 22-28 at Ayala Center Cebu

In connection with this year's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the normalization of the diplomatic relation between Japan and the Philippines, the Japanese Consulate in Cebu extends an invitation to come and attend the the Japanese Film Festival scheduled from Oct 22-28 at Cinema 4 of the Ayala Center. Admission is free.

The three films to be shown include Dora-Heita, translated as the "Alley-Cat Magistrate," The Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei), and " All Under the Moon" (Tsuki wa dochi ni dete iru). These three films, which showcase Japan's famous film personalities, from actors to directors and producers, will take the audience from Japan's past to the present, back to the days of the Japanese samurais to contemporary Japan showing the involvement of a Korean Japanese cab driver with a Filipino bar hostess.

Dora-Heita, translated as the "Alley-Cat Magistrate" is a 111-minute film whose story was written by Yamamoto Shugoro, directed by Ichikawa Kon, and the screen play by The Committee on Four Knights that includes world-famous Kurosawa Akira together with Ichikawa Kon, Kinoshita Keisuke and Kobayashi Masaki. This movie's cast includes popular stars Asano Yuko, Yakusho Koji, and Sugawara Bunta. This film centers on the mission of a new magistrate, Koheito Mochizuki, played by Koji Yakusho, who pretends to be a decadent official so as to complete his "undercover mission" to rid the feudal domain of crime bosses (yakuzas) in cahoots with the courtiers in the castle.

The Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei) is the first full-scale period film by the master of Japanese film industry Yamada Yoji (famous for the Tora-san series, The Yellow Handkerhief, A Class to Remember, and other titles) which tells us the story of Iguchi Seibei (Sanada Hiroyuki), a widower struggling to make ends meet to support his two young children and his old senile mother on his meager salary. Seibei goes home directly from work every twilight (tasogare) to take on the other jobs for his family, hence his nickname Twilight Seibei; and he also saves his former sweetheart (played by the beautiful Miyazawa Rie) from her abusive husband and gets involved as well as as with a clan whose superiors want him to assassinate another samurai.

"All under the Moon" (Tsuki wa dochi ni dete iru), on the other hand, is a 109-minute hilarious comedy that received major Japanese film awards in 1993. Directed by Shi Yoichi with the cast of Kashitani Goro, Chi Yong Sung, and Iwaze Moeko, the story revolves around a Korean-Japanese taxi driver who falls in love with a Filipino entertainer working for a bar owned by his mother.

This year's Japanese Film Festival has been made possible through the energetic involvement of the Japanese Consular Office of Cebu together with the advice participation of Japan Foundation, the Cebu Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industries, the Japanese Association in Cebu, and Ayala Center.

The three films selected for special showing will run at Cinema 4 of Ayala Center for a week from October 22-28 at various hours. starting from 1 PM in the afternoon till about 10 in the evening. And what a treat for interested viewers as the film festival is free throughout the whole week.

Watch out for posters regarding the specific time schedules of the films. For more details, please contact Tel. No. 231-6872.

    ^ no problem.

i thought daghan nga movies ilang ipasalida pero there's just three movies. wish there were more though. i saw tsuki wa dochi ni dete iru (all under the moon) and dora-heita last thursday (oct 26) and tasogare seibei (the twilight samurai) yesterday (oct 27) anyway, here's my so called review of the three movies featured in the festival.

tsuki wa dochi ni dete iru (all under the moon) - this 1993 film features a korean japanese taxi driver named tadao (goro kishitani) who is employed in a taxi firm owned by a fellow korean. he is faced with discrimination by the japanese folks as well as pressure from his job, the yakuza and passengers who run away and do not pay their fare. feeling lonely and hungry for love, he meets connie, a filipina hostess working at his mother's bar. he realizes that connie (ruby moreno) is a challenging girl. she speaks japanese fluently and tells him that she only sleeps with the guy she loves. i was surprised to see some filipino talent in the movie. because of her character in the movie, i got more connected to the movie than i thought i could. the movie is rated R-18 for language and sexual scenes. i give it a rating of 8/10 for humor and an interesting plot. i couldn't find a picture of the movie's poster and came up with a only a single picture with connie and tadao.

dora-heita (alley cat magistrate) - set in traditional japan, this movie tells a story of a samurai named koheita mochizuki more commonly known as dora-heita who was newly appointed to be the leader of a very corrupt town in their fiefdom. in order to get rid of the dirty officials, he disguises as a drunkard and as a playboy (earning him the nickname dora-heita), luring his enemies and making them leave the town for good. later on he learns that his good friend senba gijuro betrayed him. senba, feeling remorse and shame committed seppuku. seppuku is the japanese ritual of killing oneself by cutting or slicing one's belly/stomach. i give it a rating of 7/10 for its humor and for its educational quality.

tasogare seibei (the twilight samurai) - among the three movies that were shown, this is my favorite. very dramatic and touching. popular japanese actor hiroyuki sanada plays the role of seibei iguchi, a 19th-century low-ranking, poor but hardworking samurai who has to deal with the death of his wife, his two young daughters (named kayano and ito) and his senile mother and a stipend of 50-koku. if you have seen the last samurai and ringu 2, you have definitely seen sanada before. later on, iguchi meets tomoe iinuma, the sister of his samurai friend and the girl who used to be his childhood playmate who just got divorced from her drunkard samurai husband. a story of the sacrifice and love, this movie is just brilliant. i highly recommend it. 10/10.
