    Weather Update
The Storm Warning Signal No. 4 in Northern Cebu and Bantayan Island means they can expect very strong winds of more than 185 kilometers per hour, and the typhoon can be expected in at least 12 hours. The area under storm Signal No. 4 is very likely to be hit directly by the eye of the storm and damage can be very heavy.

It's the calm before the storm. I remember Ruping very well and this is exactly what it was like back then. Overcast skies and occasional rain showers, but very, very quiet. You could smell the sea on the wind (like I can now). And then, the bulk of the storm hit, and all hell broke loose. Hopefully, Yolanda/Haiyan wont' be as bad, but from all reports, this is basically Ruping 2.0, right down to the typhoon track and storm strenght.

PAGASA raised signal no. 3 for Cebu City. 100 to 185 kph wind speed expected, lasting for at least 18 hours!

The last howler that wreaked havoc in Cebu was Typhoon Ruping. It hit Eastern Visayas @ 230 kph. I'm not sure what the wind speed was in Cebu at that time. All I remember was some rooftops being blown away, trees uprooted, windows shattered...and months without electricity. That was undoubtedly signal no. 3. Coincidentally, that was during the administration of another Aquino...to whom Tommy O. remarked, after receiving a paltry PHP 2 million for disaster recovery: "What am I going to do with PHP 2 million? Buy everyone here toothpicks?" Cory was heartless. She even pulled out one power barge from Mactan at a time when the power situation here was critical.

I expect the worst from this typhoon. Once this has come to past and the damage assessed, restoring electricity should be first priority by our government. Without it, recovery would be very slow and painful. I hope partisan politics won't hamper any recovery efforts (like the last time)...but I think history will repeat itself. You can always count on Pinoys to f_ck things up. Ouch! Be prepared for a miserable year.

Here's to hoping that I am wrong.

"You may suddenly feel a weird calm and quiet before a storm hits. This happens because of changes in the atmosphere as a storm builds up. Storm clouds pull in warm, moist air from all around as the storm system develops."
