for me difference gyud kung ng start ka from wider coverage like landscape to portraits. unlike ng start ka sa portrait (labina flash photography) ng focus raka sa imong subject (person) dili nka maka kita sa foreground or di nmo ma appreciate or ma balance ang foreground sa imong subject. di ka mka appreciate when to blur the background... mao rana akong na observed

diy tip for the day... kung wala mo shutter release para sa inyu long exposure pwede ra mo mag gamit ug lastiko ug eraser sa lapis.. ang inyu buhaton is i.timer ang camera (depende unsa ka dali mo maka set up) then while nag beep nah ang camera i.taod ang eraser ibabaw sa shutter then i.higot ug lastiko.. pag human nah ninyo ug expose butangi ug black card atubangan sa lens para di maka kita ang camera sa image so di siya ma camera shake or blur then i.cap (para sigurado) then i.tang2x ang lastiko...

A photograph consist of two parts, a foreground and a background. When you need to convey more attention to your subject (usually in the foreground), make the background work with the foreground. Very important bantayan ang color harmony, ang highlight and lowlight objects.

Very common mistakes in portraiture ang background objects murag mitungtong sa ulo or na merge sa buhok sa subject, meaning ang foreground ug ang background nahimong usa at some area. In portraiture specially outdoors, one can improve the output kung himoong half stop underexposed ang background than the foreground. This will give more emphasis on the subject/foreground. Isolate the subject from the background, that way lutaw ang subject ug naa pud iyang space ang background. Managlahi man 'ta ug style but this one works well most of the time.

di man pud tanan nga situation sa portrait nga i.blur gud ang background...

ang isa ka practice ma learn sa film which.. check na daan sa frame kung okay na buh tanan be it a landscape, portrait, macro or ect nga type of shoot, before taking the shot.. <- tip for the day

learn how to read the histogram. in ideal conditions, aim for the bell curve shape.

here's a tip nga medjo umm... "debatable" tingale with purist... use the LCD... (0_o) kay nganu? kay some events happens once in a lifetime.. make sure nalng na kuha kay sah pag abot sa balay pag download palpak.. it's also a great tool to check more or less na kuha nah nimo ang imu idea gi visualized (exposure ug composition wise)

aw hala... ato nlang sila i exempt nga mga portraits nga wla gi blur bisag ng samok ang background kay lagi hilig ug portraits... ato lang sad i exempt ang mga "portrait photographers" nga gi blur ang sunset/sunrise.... kay lagi "portrait" ang ray ganahan ipakita

from what i understand sa point ni sir @michaelocana, most of those new to photography who start in portraiture/model shoots often aim for professional portrait photography -meaning, just because they have the gears they could produce the same shots as those seen in magazines or portfolios of professional portrait photographers.

what they fail to understand is that anyone can take a portrait shot, even using a camera phone, but not anyone can make that distinction between a snapshot portrait and an artistic portrait. why? because artistic portraits are very technical.

unlike most other photography genres, portraiture requires proper use of lighting (ambient or artificial), building an ambience to set a predefined theme, and directing the model's facial expression, pose, and relative position. sadly, most of those starting out in portraiture without experience in other genres merely copy a certain pose or background without getting the feel of the moment and using that to produce distinct photos. palinkuron na lang ang model, ingnon nga tan-aw dri tan-aw ngadto, test shot, butang flash, test shot na pud, patindugon, test shot na pud, change position, test shot na pud nya ang ending ma frustrate and mo ingon nga ah daugon na lang ni sa PP.

but if naay gamay nga mastery sa basics like exposure triangle, DOF, and interaction/directing of models di na needed daghang test shots kay kabalo na daan unsay goal and how to achieve that goal. kani nga basics mas dali ma master kung mo try og streets or landscapes since di kaayo strict ang requirements so you'll have more time for trial and error until comfortable na ka sa pagtimpla2 sa settings.

mao ning wa ko nag focus sa portraiture, wala ko'y patience to do all that preparation nor the social skills to interact properly with models hahaha
