never live in the shadow of perceived "masters". while it is good to set your goals based on the work of more experienced shooters, it also does not help if you get frustrated because you can never "reach their level". learn and master the basics of lighting and composition then establish your own unique brand of photography. you may make a lot of mistakes along the way, but that is how the best photographers learned. be patient, be determined. but ayaw pagdali and think that you're not getting "good shots" because your gear is nowhere near theirs. just my two cents...

Indoor photography at night with normal party lighting (function rooms), around 1/30sec to 1/45sec shutter speed with aperture opening f4 up to f8 works in manual setting works well with flash balancing the foreground and background.
You can play a low shutter speed setting that matches a low light ambiance with disco lights pulsing, flash set at rear sync facing 45 to 90 degrees up with built-in bounce card up for beautiful action shots with wide angle or an ultra wide lens with you with the dancing crowd. Near ground level shots looking up are also nice in this situation.

Sports mode setting shooting sports events in sunny daylight works great in catching the action with a telephoto lens. Shutter speed priority set to 1/60sec works great also with panning shots. Practice to make yourself comfortable with these settings makes everything easy.

Composition is the essence of every photograph, light is only next. Work on your composition first, get that natural feel of what brings out the subject or the message you wish to convey. Every viewer has this natural sense of what is a good photograph and can understand the message right away - provided you have the right composition.

The difference between an ordinary viewer mindset and a photographer mindset is that the viewer does not care how the photograph was taken while the photographer think of the how, where and when the photograph was taken. However, knowing why a photograph should be taken or should not be taken is an attitude that every person with a camera should always have. We can call that as responsible photography. One should understand that not every thing should be in a photograph, you will know when to take and not to take when you understand the value of your intent.

"your're not" is not "dili" but "wala" so sa bisaya pa "wala ka kakuha ug good shots kay imong gamit di katupong sa ilaha". hope that clears things up.
