According to Kotaku, there is a new slimmer Sony PSP in development. While this news hasn’t been confirmed officially, it fits in with my prediction a while ago about the next PSP being more of a PSP 1.5, with revised looks, but no changes to functionality, such as an extra analogue nub.
Sony will be keen to retain compatability with the current PSP titles, while making enough changes to get the new device to appeal to owners of the current PSP.
The new Playstation Portable will have a much slimmer design, thanks mostly to a new LED screen that will deliver an ultra-crisp image but take up far less space. That LED also helps pump up the battery life of this sexy new model, which can last as much as four times longer than the original PSP. While the new PSP still makes use of the UMD drive, it will be a faster version and to help speed up loadtimes and gameplay, the portable will come packed with 8GBs of internal flash memory. Finally, the PSP’s much maligned buttons have been revamped and the D-Pad has gotten a major overhaul, giving portable gamers something more like a Playstation 3 D-pad to play with.
Don’t forget that the above is all based on guesswork, with nothing confirmed. While extended battery life and a better screen (that can be viewed outdoors please) will be welcome changes, I’m not sure how many existing PSP owners will be rushing out to buy the second incarnation of the device they know and love.
We are pretty much guaranteed that a new PSP will be relatively hack proof to start with, so homebrew potential will be nil. Whether a new, slimmer PSP will be totally hack-proof is questionable, but I would expect it to be harder to crack than the current PSP.
There are also questions about whether the new PSP will have the camera built into it as standard. This will probably remain as an add-on device to keep costs down, as its benefit to gamers is relatively low.
Kotaku believes the price of this new PSP is going to be $170 USD, which is around £90 GBP, so I think they are off on this slightly. I would expect the retail price in the UK to be around £180 GBP initially, as excitement for the new version is ramped up with some clever advertising campaigns by Sony.
Will I buy one? Possibly. Depends on how compatible the new slimmer PSP proves to be with the older PSP games. It also depends on whether Sony add any extra functions to the device, or open up the multimedia capabilities to play more music and video file types. At the right price, it will make an ideal second PSP for someone who lusts after the latest gadget, and who wants the extra extended battery life. Biggest persuader for me though would be the ability to use the PSP outdoors in sunlight.
FYI to all.. just want to share..
