Congressman behind Marcus Douthit’s citizenship wants more naturalized players in Gilas pool

Antipolo City representative Robbie Puno, the author of the law that bestowed Filipino citizenship on Philippine team star center Marcus Douthit in 2011, is batting for more naturalized players to become part of the national pool.

In a privilege speech before the House of Representatives on Monday, the Deputy Speaker praised Gilas Pilipinas for their second place finish in the FIBA Asia Championship. He paid tribute to the coaches, the players, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas officials led by president Manuel V. Pangilinan, officials of the PBA, and basketball fans who trooped to the Mall of Asia Arena to cheer on the national team.

The silver medal finish meant the team achieved its goal of qualifying for the FIBA World Cup next year, which will mark the return of the Philippines to the world stage for the first time in four decades.

Puno noted the significant contributions of Douthit, the team’s top scorer and rebounder before getting injured in the final two games of the tournament, to the success of the national program.

Beyond the center’s contribution’s on the court, the lawmaker also hailed Douthit for becoming truly a part of his adopted country.

“Marcus Douthit has embraced our culture and has become a Filipino in every way. His two children go to school in the Philippines. He has in fact, and he will hate me for mentioning this in a privilege speech — but I will say it anyway — he has in fact found love in the Philippines. He has contributed immensely to the country’s recent rise in FIBA rankings and his contributions to the country are, indeed, outstanding,” said Puno.

He listed four key factors — a long-term program, the support of the PBA, financial support from Pangilinan, and the naturalization of a top player — that contributed to the success of Gilas.

With this, Puno asked his colleagues to grant Filipino citizenship to more players who could play for the national team in the future, noting that under Philippine law, legislation is the fastest way to naturalize an individual.

“We in Congress may confer citizenship to whomever we so believe deserves it by virtue of his or her exceptional merit and ability. Therefore, only we in the Congress can continue to make the outstanding contributions to our Philippine National Basketball Team, by way of supplying the team with the naturalized players essential to its lasting success,” he said.

“I stand here today to ask your support for future legislation that would continue the program that was started with Douthit.

“I stand here today, to urge Congress to naturalize at the minimum two players identified by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas for the national team that would serve as back up players to one another in case any one of them gets injured.

“Thus, the Philippine national team avoids the inconvenience of jeopardizing the whole program in the event of an injury to any of our two naturalized players as what had happened when Douthit became physically impaired during the championship game with Iran last night.”

Puno cited examples to show that fielding naturalized players is part and parcel of the international game.

“There are, in fact, countries who have a pool of naturalized players for their national team. Qatar has naturalized American nationals such as Jarvis Hayes, Trey Johnson and Boney Watson. Lebanon has naturalized Loren Woods, Joe Vogel, and Jackson Vroman,” said Puno.

    a small advice from BlackMamba

MANILA, Philippines -- Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant had a few words of advice for the Gilas Pilipinas national team after their silver medal finish in the recently concluded 27th FIBA Asia Men's Basketball Championship.

Bryant, who is in Manila to promote Lenovo mobile phones, told Gilas Pilipinas to continue to keep playing as a team.

"Just continue to play together," he said during a press conference at Resorts World Monday. "It's a team sport. It's about how individuals work together."

Bryant stressed that playing as a team will allow Gilas to hide some of their weaknesses as individuals.

Bryant, a five-time NBA champion, also advised the national team to "tune out the noise and the fanfare" and instead focus on the task at hand, which is the FIBA World Cup in Spain next year.

ok ra naay naturalized player boss. other nations who are perennial contingents in fiba world cup have naturalized players man gani, like Jordan, China, Korea, Angola and Spain.
