People from other countries have come to equate Scats as Oddballs, For the reason that, scats were rare and unique that time. Fortunitely, The philippines is home to 1 variety of Scatophagus argus which is pictured below. I have first encountered this fish in manalili when i was little. That time, all the vendors were selling their stocks in the sidewalk of magallanes street, wala pa ang aquapetz, riverfront and piper's and the vendors' stocks are contained in tiny mayonaise bottles. Scatophagus means " eater of feces or fecal eater " kung sa binisaya pa tig kaon ug tae hehe, they got that name since they are noted to enter highly polluted waters and sewers and will sometimes nibble on human wastes. Scats are not as insensitive as thier name suggests, just like any other fish they are also sensitive when it comes to water quality.

The Scat in the picture below is what we can actually find in manalili, most of the time they are not in good condition its either gi Ich or naay samad especially the big ones. I have 7 scats at home and one of them has been with me for more than a year.

    COMMON NAME:
Tiger Scat, Ruby Scat, Red Scat and Argus fish

    SCIENTIFIC NAME:
    Scatophagus argus

    MANALILI/MAGALLANES NAME:
    Scatfish and Scat

    LOCAL NAME:
Kikiro, Akikiro, Bayang, Kapiged,Kitong, Lanbia, Lankia, Malaga, Ngi-ni-ngisi, Ngisi-ngisi,Pingaw, Pingo, Quequero, Spadefish, Tikero

This Scat look so stunning, nindot kaayo ang pattern sa spots.

    COMMON NAME:
    Green Scat and Spotted Scat

    SCIENTIFIC NAME:
    Scatophagus argus

    MANALILI/MAGALLANES NAME:
None - never been displayed in manalili although some individuals may sometimes appear like the scat above.

    LOCAL NAME:
    None

This Scat looks so edible but still would look good in your tanks.

    COMMON NAME:
    Silver Scat

    SCIENTIFIC NAME:
    Scatophagus (Selenotoca) multifasciatus

    MANALILI/MAGALLANES NAME:
None - this scat have never been displayed in manalili as well. Probably a food fish in general.

    LOCAL NAME:
    None

The information below may or may not apply to all the above species

    ORIGIN:
The Philippines and some other Southeast Asian contries like china and Japan also in Kuwait.

    DIET:
Scats have a huge appetite and they can be very nippy towads other fish especially if their tankmates are those that have veil tails. Most of the time, when they are new to the tank, they can be a little challenging when it comes to feeding, They are sometimes reluctant to take pellets and other standard fish foods, The way to work through this problem, is by giving them lettuce or pechay just to perk them up and then most of them will soon associate you with food and will eat whatever you give them, Although some of them will still stick with eating just the lettuce but at least they wont be starving anymore.

IDENTIFICATION: There are a lot of scat varieties from one species ( Scatophagus argus )

    NOTES:
Scats also belong to the perciforme order and they do not have any sexual differences. They spawn on the reefs, sometimes on magrove swamps and thier eggs are boyant, they do not provide any parental care.

This is a very nice and interesting species of Scat, Its one of a kind and one that can never be confused with the other species. The sad thing is this is not native to the philippines.

    COMMON NAME:
    Striped Scat and African Scat

    SCIENTIFIC NAME:
    Scatophagus tetracanthus

    ORIGIN:
Indo-West Pacific: Somalia and Kenya to South Africa, Australia and Papua New Guinea. Also found in the rivers and lagoons of East Africa
