I think that was one thing that many basketball fans overlook about DONDON...is that HE had great Basketball IQ! Being able to compete INTERNATIONALLY, great player have to play on both ends of the floor. Something DONDON can really provide at par with what NORWOOD had done for these past games!

Iran Coach says Gilas is dangerous

The Slovenian coach of the powerhouse Iran team cited the Philippines as among the teams he has to worry about as he arrived yesterday cautious but brimming with confidence.

“We are going to win the title but five or six other teams want to do that,” said coach Memi Becirovic. “Teams such as South Korea and the Philippines are dangerous as well as China.”

Iran’s stature as the likely champion rose after the team captured the Jones Cup a few weeks ago, the same event where the Philippines, the defending champion, was not allowed to compete owing to a recent sea dispute with Taiwan.

Becirovic is not only proud of his team, but by inference also proud of himself, saying that he is coach of the best Asian team.

“We won Williams Jones Cup last month and it shows that we are on the right track,” the 52-year-old Becirovic said.

The FIBA Asia championship begins on Thursday at the Mall of Asia where 15 teams will be vying for three slots for the World Championships to be held in Spain next year.

In the FIBA webpage, the Slovenian coach said he has high regard for his team to capture the championship

“I believe in my team and without a doubt I am coach of the best Asian team in the competition.”

His boast carry some water. He coached his own country to an 8th place finish in the World Championship three years ago in Turkey and the Jones Cup was the second title of Iran under Becirovic as they also reigned supreme in the 4th FIBA Asia Cup in Tokyo. The win gave them an automatic slot to the tournament.

Still, redemption will be on top of Iran’s agenda which will be without NBA-bound 23-year-old Arsalan Kazemi. The team did not reach the final four after a shock loss to Jordan in the quarterfinal in Wuhan, China two years ago.

Even without the 6-foot-7 Kazemi who averaged 23 points the last time, Iran remains a formidable force due to the presence of 7-foot-2 Hamed Haddadi, prolific forward Samad Nikkhah Bahrami and point guard Mahdi Kamrani.

While he’s confident of their chances, Becirovic picked South Korea, Gilas Pilipinas and China as the teams that may give them big problem.

The team will also have veterans Hamed Afagh, Asghar Kardoust, Aren Davoudi and Oshin Sahakian.

Iran is bracketed in Group C with South Korea and China. Malaysia will be the bracket’s punching bag.

you can't rely on luck you need to rely on experience and playing high IQ. Og dili uroy bwenason si David pila na ka games on and off iya dinuwaan. May gani consistent si Chan sa iya offense then mo step up jud si Norwood og Japeth sa ila position. Ang kana position ni David fit kaayo si Dondon diha sayang wala na apil

kay if dili mo click and offense ni dondon we can rely on his defense mo sugot rman to dili maka score basta maka contribute cya sa defense.

If dili nahan si chot reyes si Dondon naa man si Arwind Santos nga pwede pud unta maka contirbute og defense timbang ni Pingris. Kay when it comes to rebounding size doesn't matter if kabaw ka mo timing og mo position sa imo self inside the paint. Or kato si Belga or Thoss para timbang ni De Ocampo

    China can be beaten

Jimmy Mariano, the sweet-shooting skipper of the Philippine team that won the 7th ABC Championship 40 years ago in Manila, sat through China’s 79-45 drubbing of India Tuesday in the 27th FIBA Asia Champion and got confirmation of what he has heard before.

“Ibang klaseng China ang nakita ko kanina,” said Mariano at ringside of the Mall of Asia Arena. “Di kamukha nong dati na talagang sharp at dominant.”

Though he acknowledged that China may have been weakened considerably by the injury to star forward Yi Jianlian, who missed his fourth straight game with a pulled groin muscle, Mariano said much more was amiss.

“There’s something wrong. Parang mabigat ang katawan nila; walang fluidity,” he said.

From behind the Chinese lines, Mariano zeroed in on what he felt was a factor contributing to the Mainlanders’ current state: Instructions that could be lost in translation.

“Bench pa lang me problema na – communication,” he said, pointing to where Greek coach Panagiotis Giannakis had sat. “Kitang-kita e. Sisigaw yung head coach, tapos sisigaw yung isa para i-relay yung gusto nong coach. Hindi direct ang bigay ng instruction. Malaking bagay yon kasi nawawala yung impact.”

Bold as was when he was launching over-the-head bombs from 30 feet out during his MICAA days, the two-time Olympian, now 71, was even bolder in his forecast that China could be had should Gilas Pilipinas run into it in the quarterfinals.

“Ay naku, kayang-kaya natin,” he said without hesitation before adding, “kung ang ilalaro natin e yung nilaro natin sa Japan. Kaya natin. Si Wang Zhizhi medyo mabagal na, di ba? Tapos yung isa namang Wang [Zhelin], bata pa e, raw na raw, hilaw. Wala rin silang mabuting point guard samantalang tayo me tatlo na matitibay na puwedeng magpalitan. So sa nakita ko kanina, malaki ang chance natin pag nakalaban natin ang China.”

    Jordan vs Iran in quarters

Jordan claimed the last berth in the knockout stages of the FIBA Asia Championship after dispatching Japan, 65-56, to arrange a quarterfinals rematch with Iran yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Naturalized Jimmy Baxter and Mohammed Shaher Hussein sparked the onslaught in the third quarter where they turned a 30-24 halftime lead into a commanding 18-point advantage to propel Jordan into the next phase of the Asian Championship.

Baxter had 16 points while Hussein added 15 points and 19 rebounds as Jordan finished Group E in fourth place at 2-3.

The prize of Jordan’s victory over the inconsistent Japanese squad is a duel with the Iranians, the same team that they beat in the last eight of the 2011 edition held in Wuhan.

In that quarters encounter, Jordan stunned the previously unbeaten Iranians, 88-84, behind naturalized guard Rasheim Wright, versatile Zaid Abbas, guard Sam Daghles and Islam Abbas.

Jordan went on to beat Smart Gilas Pilipinas (75-61) in the semis before losing a heartbreaker to China (70-69) in the finals.

The four are not part of this year’s squad but Jordan coach Alexandris Evangelos, the successor of 2011 coach Tab Baldwin, is confident that his young team can pull the trick again.

“We belong in the same region, they know us and we know them. Iran is a very good team but our focus is to be ready and be prepared again,” said Evangelos through an interpreter.

Iran primed itself for their clash with an 85-53 rout of the injury-stricken Kazakhstan squad that played minus three players, particularly Jerry Johnson and Mikhail Yevstigneyev.

“Our players will be motivated for that game because they had a bad experience in the previous competition,” Iran mentor Mehmed Becirovic said. “They know us, we know them.”

In last month’s Jones Cup in Taiwan, eventual champion Iran beats Jordan, 64-57, in a game that was described by the two teams as close from the start before the winning team broke away in the end.

    Neophyte senator offers Gilas advice

Newly elected Sen. JV Ejercito believes Gilas Pilipinas has learned its lessons well.

SEN. JV Ejercito“Heartbreaking talaga yung talo na yon kasi atin na but we gave it away,” said Ejercito, referring to the Gilas-Chinese Taipei game last Saturday in the 27th FIBA Asia Championship where the Nationals blew a 13-point lead going to the fourth quarter. “Tayo na nagpatalo non.”

But the son of former President Joseph Estrada, now the mayor of Manila, was quick not to lay the blame on anybody.

“Pero ayaw din naman nating manisi. Siempre wala namang perfect. Kahit si coach [Chot Reyes], ayaw namang mangyari yon,” he said minutes before Gilas plunged into action against Qatar late Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“Ang importante, we learned from our mistakes. Kita naman sa Japan game, kahit sa fourth quarter start strong na tayo agad; di na tayo nagpahinga ng marami.”

The prospect of facing either defending champion China or South Korea in the quarterfinals caused the young lawmaker to shake his head.

“Both teams will be hard to beat,” he said. “Ang Korea, magagaling ang shooters ever since; tinalo nga ang China. Yung Chinese naman, physically ang lalaki nila kumpara sa atin. But who knows? Bilog ang bola. Baka malasin sila at suwertehin naman tayo.”

Given the odds, Ejercito said the Nationals have no choice but to make things they have control over to work for them.

“Katulad nitong Qatar, ang la-laki. Kailangan daanin natin sa puso. Then yung crowd support. Tapos run-and-gun siguro ang pag-asa natin. Pag ganito kalaki ang kalaban, kailangan nating itakbo at bilisan ang laro.”

Would he then pick between China and Korea for Gilas Pilipinas in the quarters?

“Hindi, parehong mabigat na kalaban yon e,” he said.
