A BARANGAY in Mandaue City turns plastic wastes into fuel to reduce garbage.
In a recycling facility in Barangay Pagsabungan, shredded plastic materials are fed into a machine to produce fuel that can sea vessels can use.
The barangay started operating the P1.8-million machine two months ago.
“With this facility, we are able to reduce the garbage we dump in the Umapad dumpsite,” former Pagsabungan barangay captain Andres Suson said.
The facility sits on a 1,500-square meter lot, which also includes a vegetable garden.
The plastic-processing machine, which is operated by two workers, consists of a heat chamber, a condenser, a catalyst reactor and a bio-filter. It was provided by the City Government.
Suson, who was recently appointed assistant city engineer, said the barangay received the equipment because of its compliance with the solid waste management law.
The recycling facility also has a plastic shredder machine.
It also has a compost pit for biodegradable wastes.
The fertilizer from the compost pit is used in the vegetable garden. The barangay sells the fertilizer at P200 per sack.
Suson said the barangay can earn revenues from the fuel, but its main goal is to reduce garbage in its area.
“We just want a clean barangay. Our goal is zero waste,” he said.
The machine manufacturer, which is based in Lapu-Lapu City, markets the fuel produced from plastic wastes, he said.
Suson cannot estimate for now the amount of fuel being produced.
Pagsabungan is home to about 4,000 households or 20,280 people. Suson said the barangay generates 25 to 30 cubic meters of garbage every month.
Suson said he learned good practices in solid waste management from “Lakbay Aral” programs, where barangay officials visit other places to learn best practices.
(Suson was replaced by councilor Asterio Judilla Suson as barangay captain after the former was appointed assistant city engineer.)
Last year, the barangay placed second among the city’s 27 barangays in a contest on solid waste management.
Suson said the barangay has been strictly enforcing the City’s solid waste management ordinance, imposing penalties on violators.
The barangay has a solid waste management board that monitors every household’s compliance with the ordinance.
