Japan to provide Philippines with 10 cutters

Visiting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told Philippine President Benigno Aquino III during talks here July 27 that Japan would provide 10 cutters for its coast guard to help counter recent maritime advances by China.

The vessels are being provided as part of the government's official development assistance program.

With an eye on what China is doing in the region, the two leaders agreed to promote cooperation between the defense authorities and coast guards of their respective nations.

At a joint news conference following their meeting, Abe said, "We will strengthen our relationship as partners who share many strategic interests."

I doubt ma shortlisted ang Apache. It is expensive, sa budget murag tulo ray mapalit.

They're looking for 8 units. Maybe Cobra attack helicopters murag realistic.

The US is increasing its annual military assistance to the Philippines from $30 million to about $50 million, and may provide an additional Hamilton-class cutter to help the island nation build a strong defense against China.

Philippines Foreign Minister Albert Del Rosario told reporters that the increased assistance would mark the highest level of aid provided by the US since troops returned to the Philippines 13 years ago. Since 2002, the US has provided its Asian ally with $312 million in military aid and equipment.
